I made chicken katsu tonight with the panko I've had sitting in the pantry for the past couple months, and it came out really well. Like, surprisingly so. Not that katsu is really all that hard to make, but my previous efforts were never quite this good.
My dad really liked it, asking if it was something he could get in Japan, which amused me as katsu was my first favorite Japanese food. (Now? Hrm. A tie between sushi and ramen, perhaps? Is "everything" an acceptable answer?)
Yumi-san, the woman Mom put me in touch with, and I have exchanged a few emails which are appropriately chilly for the moment. She seems like a really nice lady though, and it's fun getting to write to a new Nihonjin (though I have fits of "Oh God, where is Ino, I need someone to proofread this!" just before I hit send), not to mention pretty good practice for writing things that don't sound really weird.
Oh yeah, so I'm technically on spring break this week, though it won't feel like it until Thursday.
