The idea of running across the Jennifer Saunders version for one's first exposure to the song... how very odd - as you said, it's a lot whinier, but then that's part of how it's set up in Shrek 2.
Not being female, I never looked at this song from that angle - I've just always thought it was a really powerful, rockin' song, very much "Classic 80's Pop" (sic, for those of you for whom "classic" and "80s" seems as odd as it does to me...). She also has another hit, "Total Eclipse of the Heart", which is similarly produced, and even more "dramatic", even in the original version.
There are a number of other "epic" songs like these from the same time period - "Don't Pay The Ferryman" from Chris DeBurgh is one of my favorites, as well as the more obscure "Walking on the Edge" by Rick Springfield... oh, and "The Final Countdown", by Europe, which was also the final encore at the Freezepop show.
I envy you the ability to cross cultures to find new music - I'd love to be able to check out more Russian music, but it's hard to parse thru Russian web sites looking for stuff. (Well, except for TaTu, but they simply don't count... *grin*)
