I was actually looking for Howl's Moving Castle things, cause I was asked to write a monologue for a Howl cosplayer. I'm honored that this person thinks I would be capable of doing such a thing, but the instructions I was given were that he wants it to say, "Hey, I'm Howl. I' ( Read more... )

Yeaaaah... I love that song - but the Frou Frou cover that was on the Shrek 2 soundtrack, not the Jennifer Saunders version they used IN Shrek 2. This one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VU0q-9uNhI

I actually like to think of it as a girl looking for the one she be not have to be strong with, the partner you know will watch your back so you can relax for once... but that's just me. :o)

Not like Frou Frou.
Oh, so it was in a movie thing? It sounded like quite a bit of action music just for a song. ^_^ A bit of a big orchestra, too. But that makes sense.

Your idea is good, too, but for me the "sweep me off my feet" sorta swipes it, and you still probly wouldn't want him to be fightin'. Oh well. ^_^

That song was originally recorded in 1984 by Bonnie Tyler. It appeared on the soundtrack for the Kevin Bacon movie Footloose, although the hero of that movie wasn't really a fighter (except against authority). I think the song resonated at that time because the changing role of women in American society left a lot of us feeling insecure. As small children, we were socialized to expect to be housewives and mothers. By the time we came of age, it was clear that we would have to support ourselves and make our own decisions. While new-found freedom is exhiliarating, it is also frightening.

I listened to that version. It's a whole lot less whiny than the one in the video. :) But she's a bit more yelling, too. In either case, I guess it makes sense. Since it appears it continues to be used, I guess it still has some resonance, which makes sense. It's not as big and dramatic as what happened then, but I'm pretty sure girls are still raised with some of that expectation to grow up and get married to a prince charming, but it turns out that that's not quite the way it goes. Ah well.

That version of the song was sung by the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2--who was Not a good-guy. The song fits her, and the matchmaking she's trying to do, and that has something to do with the lyrics you don't like. Though, I personally like the song, despite the lyrics, but like this version less, mostly because of who is singing it.
