Jin and Ueda were lying in bed that night, holding each other in their arms. Ueda was resting his head on Jin’s chest, while Jin had wrapped his arms around Ueda’s figure.
“Ueda?”
“…yes?” It was clear to hear the sleepiness in Ueda’s voice.
“I got to tell you something.”
“What is it?” Ueda’s eyes were closed and were already half asleep, but Jin insisted on telling him, what he saw in the alley.
“Please don’t sleep yet, it’s important, or at least…I think it’s important.”
Ueda sighted and turned so he was facing Jin, he looked really tired, but tried to stay focused.
“Yes? What is it?”
Jin sighted and told him, “On the way home, I saw Kame and Ryo.”
Ueda wrinkled his eyebrows, “So?”
“I saw them exchange money and an envelope…”
“And this is important…why?”
“They looked really suspicious, Ryo whispered something to Kame, and Kame seemed really pleased. It looked like they were making a deal, of some sort.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“You know one of those councilors, right? Can’t you talk to him?”
“About what? Do you have any proof? I can’t just walk up to him and be like: Hey! My boyfriend thinks one of your members, are a traitor, but he has no proof.”
“You need to trust me.”
Ueda gently caressed Jin’s cheek and smiled, “I do trust you! But you must understand, I can’t just walk up to him and tell him, something that you think you saw.”
“I know what I saw!”
“And I believe you! I just don’t think I can do anything about it.”
“Can’t you at least try?”
Jin looked with hope sparkled in his eyes, Ueda sighted and turned his head; avoiding the puppy eyes coming from his lover.
Jin took Ueda’s hand and begged, “Please?”
Ueda laughed and threw his hand up in defeat, “Fine! I’ll go talk to him tomorrow after work. Satisfied?”
Jin smiled and kissed him on the lips, “Yes, thank you so much! I love you!”
Ueda kissed him back and replied, “I love you too.”
************
Jin was sitting at the table drinking coffee, while reading the newspaper.
Ueda came into the living room, wearing a bathrobe; he was holding a cup of tea in one hand and an envelope in the other.
Jin looked up from the paper and asked, “What’s that?”
Ueda sat down on the opposite side of his lover and took a sip of tea, he shrugged his shoulder, “Don’t know, it came with the rest of the mail, there’s no name on it.”
Ueda gave it to Jin; Jin cautiously opened it and took out a letter.
It was a paper with writing on, which was written in bold red ink:
YOU WILL SUFFER FOR WHAT YOU’VE DONE
Ueda turned pale, “Are you sure that’s what it says?”
Jin turned the paper so Ueda cold see, “Who would do such a thing?”
“Don’t know, but hopefully it’s just some sort of sick joke. Maybe it’s just some kids having fun, sending these sorts of letters around.”
Before Ueda could answer, an object collided with one of their windows, sending glass flying everywhere.
Ueda jumped up and sprinted over to the broken window, he looked out and was carefully not to expose himself; he looked down at the street below, but the criminal was long gone.
Jin crawled out from underneath the table and sighted, “Great… that just ruined my morning.”
Ueda couldn’t help but giggle, “What are you doing under the table?”
Jin stood up and brushed off the glass shards from his clothes, “Just taking cover, you can never be too careful.”
Ueda went over and picked up the object, which was lying around the remains of their window.
It was a rock, on the size of a fist, a piece of paper was stuck to it, which read DIE.
He gave it to Jin, “Still think its kids playing around?”
Jin growled, “No, but whoever it is, seriously needs some beating…Ueda? I know you won’t like this idea, but I think we need protection.”
Ueda looked at him with a furious look, “No! Definitely not! You can’t be serious!”
“Calm down, I only mean this for our own protection, we can’t do this alone. These people mean serious harm to us.”
“But why? We can take care of ourselves! We don’t need a babysitter”
“I don’t want anything bad to happen to you, I would be devastated…”
Ueda looked down on the ground and whispered, “Still, I don’t want this, and we can’t be alone then.”
Jin was careful not to step on the glass and walked over to Ueda and pulled him into a hug, “We can still be alone, just because we get protection doesn’t mean we can’t have time for ourselves. I promise we’ll figure things out, I promise.”
Ueda laughed into Jin’s hair, “We make a lot of promises to each other, don’t we?”
“I guess we do, but that’s what happens, when you’re in love.”
************
Ueda was sitting in a leather armchair, with his legs crossed; he looked around the small room, which he was in.
It wasn’t much bigger than the office that, Jin and Ueda had; it was made of dark grey bricks and candles were giving the room, a mysterious and creepy look.
Beside Ueda was another armchair, and to the left of it, was a small table with a stack of papers on.
The heavy wooden door opened and Ueda quickly stood up, through the door entered Sho Hagashi with two wine glasses, but it wasn’t wine that was in them.
Sho smiled and gestured for Ueda to sit, “Please, make yourself comfortable.”
Ueda bowed and sat down, “Thank you, my Lord.”

Sho Hagashi was to be considered a person in his late 40’ies, by the human standard; but by the vampire’s standards, he was more than a thousand years old.
His thick black hair had been brushed back and his mustache made him look much older.
He was wearing a dark brown suite with a blood red tie, his shoes were well polished and his buttons on his jacket was made of gold.

Sho gestured for Ueda to take the glass; Ueda looked at it for a second with a frowned look.
The Elder chuckled and said, “There’s nothing to fear, it’s just blood.”
Ueda still didn’t look pleased; Sho finally shoved the glass into Ueda’s hand and sat down.
Sho took a sip of the blood before saying, “its sheep blood.”
Ueda held the glass carefully and smelled to the content.
“No harms done, I knew you wouldn’t like human blood, so I got someone to run a little errand for me.” Sho twirled his glass around, so the blood almost spilled out, “not as strong in the taste as a humans, but the thickness and smell isn’t too bad.”
Ueda didn’t look convinced, Sho chuckled, “Go ahead, taste it! It’s not human blood, I promise.”
Ueda put the glass up to his lips and took a little sip; he let the blood run around his mouth before swallowing. Sho was right, of course, it was blood from a sheep.
He could feel the blood settle in his stomach, making his body feel hot.
Sho smiled so his fangs was exposed, “You haven’t changed at all since I last saw you, still not drinking human blood.”
Ueda carefully added, “not human blood, my Lord.”
Sho looked at Ueda’s close, “I know… I can smell the animal all over your clothes.”
Ueda didn’t say anything, he trusted Sho, even though he could be a tough guy sometimes.
Sho took another sip, “Ah…yes, I remember when I found you on the street, half-turned…You were such a mess…”
Ueda flinched by the memories, he had tried a long time ago, to forget what had happened to him.
Sho continued, his eyes clouded with the memories that he tried to recall.
“Those creatures did such an awful job…all the blood, you were barely alive…but I remember your eyes, those pleading round orbs… what was it you said to me?”
Ueda whispered, “Please safe me…it hurts…I don’t want to die…”
Sho nodded in agreement, “Yes, that’s right…I’m glad I fulfilled your wish, else we wouldn’t be here today.”
“I owe you my life, you saved me back then, I’m very grateful.”
The room echoed with a deep laughter, Sho almost dropped his glass.
“No, you’re not! You never wanted to be a vampire, but I still turned you! You may feel grateful for me saving your life, but deep inside, you still haven’t forgiven me for what I did.”
Ueda couldn’t argue, so he kept his head down.
The laughter echoed out and the room was quiet once again.
“I’m sorry…”
Ueda looked surprised up, Sho had his eyes on the wall behind him; clearly avoiding eye contact, Sho was a man (well, a vampire) with dignity, so he hated saying sorry.
“I knew you didn’t want to be turned, but you left me with no choice…I saw that you had potential, and I didn’t want to lose that. Those bastards just left you there in the alley, half dead; it couldn’t have been any other way…”
Sho put his glass down and crossed his legs and laid his hands in his lap; quickly changing the subject.
“Now, what was it that you wanted to talk about?”
Ueda was brought out of his daze and looked up, “Me and my…friend are suspicious about Ryo Nishikido.”
Sho looked neither pleased nor angry, “Why?”
“Well, Jin said he saw Ryo exchange letters and money to Kame Kazuya. So he got the impression that Ryo might be up to something.”
“Do you have any proofs of this?”
“No, but I trust Jin with my life, he wouldn’t lie to me.”
“And what do you expect me to do?”
“I don’t know; maybe keep an eye out for Ryo, just to be sure.”
Sho sighted and leaned back in his chair, “I can hardly see what I’m suppose to do.”
“You and the others are with Ryo almost every day, it would be easy to keep an eye on him, to make sure he didn’t do anything wrong.”
“To spy on him, you mean.”
Ueda flinched, “Sort of, but we just want to be sure, that Ryo isn’t doing anything, that he isn’t suppose to do. I don’t trust him.”
“I don’t know what happened between you and Nishikido, but I hope it isn’t involved in this matter. Clear your head, before you ask for my help.”
“This doesn’t have anything to do with Nishikido and me; I just want to confirm our suspicion.”
“Your suspicion?” Ueda could see Sho’s mouth curve upwards slightly.
“Please, can we finish this discussion so I can go? I need to call a repair man, to fix our window, since it broke-” Ueda stopped talking as soon as he realized what he had done. But it was too late; Sho had caught onto Ueda’s sentence and wanted to know, what had happened.
“I’m listening,” said Sho, you could hear that Sho sounded interested.
Ueda hesitated for a second, “this morning, we received a letter with writing on it.”
Sho looked amused, “Yes, letters tend to have writing on them.”
Ueda ignored the sarcasm and continued, “there was a threat written on it, but there were no name or signature on it. A few minutes later a rock broke our window, it had also writing on it.”
“Have you received anything besides this?”
“No.”
“There wasn’t anything suspicious or something that could look dangerous?”
“No.”

Sho sat in silence for a second, carefully planning and thinking about strategies; Ueda sat and was anxious, he didn’t want Sho to order bodyguards. It would ruin Jin and his private time together.
Sho finally looked up, “It has been decided, I will personally make sure that you are watched and guarded 24/7, I’ll also make arrangements for your broken window.”
Ueda tried not to sound angry, “My Lord, I don’t believe it’s a good decision…”
“Are you questioning my abilities?”
“No, no! Not at all, my Lord. I just don’t like the idea, of people watching us all the time.”
“You leave me with no choice, Tatsuya; you are both important to this society and it would be a great loss to lose you. Someone clearly wants to hurt you, but I’m going to make sure that it doesn’t happen. Dismissed.”
Sho stood up and Ueda followed, he bowed and left the room quietly, but with a burning desire to scream out.
This isn’t what he wanted, it was the totally opposite.
Because of Sho’s decision, Jin and Ueda would have less private time together, and they would be watched all the time.
Ueda kicked angrily to a rock on the way home.

************
“Ueda, calm down.”
Ueda walked back and forth the living room, his hands folded behind his back.
“Who do they think we are? We don’t need protection; we can take care of ourselves!”
“They only mean it in a good way; they don’t want us to get hurt!”
“It’s not only that! Those guards-” Ueda pointed towards the front door, “-are standing right outside our door! We can’t even have privacy anymore!”
“Of course we can! They won’t come inside our home, they’re only standing outside, and they can’t even hear us!”
Ueda stopped and placed his hands on his hips, looking daringly at Jin. “Oh yeah? Want to bet?”
Jin was about to protest, but Ueda had already grabbed the vase from the dinner table and threw it against the wall; it shattered into a million pieces and flowers lay scattered all over the floor.
Before Jin could do anything, the front door was forcefully kicked in and 3 vampires ran into the living room.
They were wearing bullet proof vests and were holding guns, the leader looked around and asked, “What’s wrong? Did someone break in?”
Ueda looked at the guard with a boring look and waved his hand, “You can go, there’s no problem here.”
The guard bowed and left with the other 2 vampires; as soon as they had closed the door behind them, Ueda started to yell again.
“See?! This is what I’m talking about!”
Jin sighted, “Will you please stop yelling! It doesn’t help, getting all worked up.”
“I’m sorry, but I’m just so frustrated!”
“About what?”
“About us, this, everything! It has barely been a month since the incident, and we’ve barely settled down, now all this stuff is happening; I just want some time to be with you, alone.”
Jin walked over and pulled Ueda into a hug, “Don’t worry, when all of this is over we’ll have time; all the time in the world, don’t worry.”
Ueda sighted, he could feel that Jin’s presence made his body calm down, it was a nice feeling.
“I’m sorry…”
“It’s okay, I understand…we’ll figure things out, as soon as they find out who did all this; then we’ll be able to settle down, I promise.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
