I was recently turned on to
The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi which, unsurprisingly, is an anime. It's got some light-hearted comedy, some deep dramatic themes, and some bewildering at times sci-fi elements. If you like anime, I HIGHLY recommend checking this out. If you actively don't like anime, this will not change your mind. If you're on the fence, I HIGHLY recommend checking this out. I tried to find some episodes on YouTube, but apparently the Japanese TV on top of that like ugly on monkeys, so nothing doing. I have, however, been linked to a
torrent site where A.F.K. has been posting their fansubs, so if you know how to work a
BitTorrent client, you can pick them up at your leisure.
Don't let the first episode scare you off, it's... unique, I guess, would be the term to describe it. Watch at least the first three episodes before deciding, and realize that the more sci-fi elements don't really come into play until around episode 5.
Oh yeah, and the series order isn't chronological order. Personally, I like the arrangement as it keeps you hooked and puts the climax of the series where it should be, but people have complained, so I'm just warning you.
