So tonight Jenn and I saw the 12:50a show of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." Turns out that attending the late show on a Saturday is a terrible idea.
At the beginning of the actual film, people were slow to quit conversing and watch the film. The couple behind us talked incessantly, and when we asked them to quit they took offense that we would look at them. Like we were ruining their movie experience. Then they spoke in spanish at slow parts throughout the movie, and I'm convinced that they were insulting us. Takes real brave people to talk shit in a language that's not expected to be understood. Real tough guys do that shit. Also, the guy got up to use the "restroom" 3 or 4 times. I don't think he was going to the bathroom at all.
Several rows further back were several "thugs" that talked loudly and would laugh like little girls in completely inappropriate parts of the film. "Let's get fucking stoned and go to a scary movie!" Great idea guys. Thanks.
To my right, another couple would talk/yell to each other, but by this point it was obvious to me that there were too many people who simply didn't give a fuck about common courtesy for me to have any affect on them. So I tried to ignore them as best as I could. At the end of the movie the girl read aloud all subtitles... very slowly. She would go even slower when encountering a more complex word. I suspect a link with those who are ignorant/uneducated and the general lack of consideration.
Twice someone began snoring. Twice phones rang. When it was one of the thugs' phones that rang, one of their party called from down the row "Man, pick up that nigger's phone!" So while hotshot's sneaking off to the bathroom to toke up or bump or what-have-you, he also leaves his phone. Nice people, those guys.
We did get free tickets "for [our] inconvenience." I'm not sure I want to use them. Certainly not for a late show. I think researchers refer to it as a "sampling error" - when the group examined is biased towards a certain characteristic not wholly representative of the population. In this case - we went to see the movie that all the degenerates wanted to see. Lucky us. But even when notified (during the movie) of the assholes, the manager did little - he did promise to send in a police officer, which sounded good. But the officer came in, stayed for a short time, said nothing (even as people were talking), and then left. Thanks officer.
Josh Sachs said he saw the movie on the opening night and had the same problem. So what it sounds like, is that once the Waterford Lakes Regal gets your money, they don't care too much. They'll bribe you to keep you business, but they don't care if you enjoy your experience as their patron... as long as you keep coming. As for what I think, there are several other good theaters around - the Oviedo Marketplace is only an additional 10 minutes of driving.
I guess I'm more upset that people don't really care about "movie-goers like you." When someone refuses to be controlled, they're no longer controllable. This sounds incredibly obvious and stupid, but say you were golfing. Say the group in front of you is drinking beer and taking pictures and yelling and playing slow. Say you tell them to hurry up, and they tell you to fuck yourself - they're having fun. Do you get in a fight with them over it? It may be the only way to address their behavior. But getting in a fight with them won't change anything - they never cared about you anyway. Worse, you as the person that respects the rules will be the one who feels bad for breaking them. Much worse, it's not worth it anyway - you still can't play golf any quicker.
So while I tried to pay attention to the movie, I stewed about my situation. Obviously I'm not going to get in a fight or shouting match with someone about their rudeness - they don't care, and I accomplish nothing. So I'm incapable of addressing the situation. But is it the theater's job to enforce courteous movie-going behavior? Should they escort people out for breaking a rule that's at best a tacit agreement (or at least was previously one) between the public to respect each other?
I'm not sure, but I think the situation is just pretty bad locally, and I'm starting to look forward to getting out of the area. Maybe people still give a fuck about respect somewhere in this country.
