RPM Challenge - Day 4 of 29

Feb 04, 2008 16:35

I spent a couple of hours on the 1st and another couple more today (the 4th) laying down sporadic song ideas for the RPM Challenge. So far I have 8 rough songs... though some barely qualify as songs. I'm not sure all of them will work, so I'm likely going to come up with about twenty and see what sticks with the band. Our first recording session is on the 10th... JEBUS! THAT'S THIS SUNDAY! Man, I still have studio wiring to do too. No sleep for Jimmy this week.

This is what I'm fairly certain of:

The album title will be The Ether Family Presents... and vice versa (thanks to a_bonsai_tree for that one)

All the songs will be about fictional characters and have their names in the titles (slight nod to The Ramones there).

Here are titles to the songs in progress:

Dear Rachel
What Would Daniel Do?
Heaven To Betsy
Sue and Me/Sue Me
Bruno's Amnesty International Official Guitar Strap
Terribly Lucky Danforth Buckley
Code Song (working title... not settled on the character name yet)
Catarina Valentino

"Terribly Lucky Danforth Buckley" and "Heaven To Betsy" are nearly done. Those are frontrunners of the pack certainly. I'll post lyrics to those as soon as they are done. But the only completely finished lyrics are for "Catarina Valentino", which I just completed. Wanna read it? Here it go!

###

Catarina Valentino

Catarina Valentino
I met her down in Reno
she had a maraschino
cherry between her lips
she said I'd tie a knot for you
but I'm tongue-tied and poor of joy
dear young boy just let me be

I've been on this ride too long (too long)

Catarina Valentino
sought love from those who were cool
orbiting in circles
around their depleting glare
and when they burned out she'd go flying
onto the ground and crying
over loss of their lying
now thankfully she's declared

I've been on this ride too long (too long)

Catarina Valentino
then knocked the merry-go round down
without a sound
and grabbed my hand
she took me deep into the woods pitch-black
said stay with me
promise we will not go back

'Cause I've been on that ride alone for too long

I'm having fun writing this stuff. It's spontaneous word-play with the focus being on getting the gut feeling across out of the combination of words, melody, sounds, etc. Far less cerebral than the How To Get Lost... stuff, which while being more at my core, often is a bit weighted in subtext. It's just nice to show a different side to my writing (which was the point of The Aloha State, but that's musically far less immediate due to the quirky approach to recording).

Anyway, I have to admit that "Catarina Valentino" sounds a lot like either a Doug Gillard or Jason Falkner tune as I've written it -- played just as guitar and vocals. Once the guys and doll get a hold of it though, who the eff knows where it's going to go. I probably will lay down a quick demo tonight, and if so, I'll post it.
