I just confirmed that
I'm eligible for the John W. Campbell Award for best new science fiction or fantasy writer. If you're a member of
Renovation, the 2011 World Science Fiction Convention or you were a member of
Aussiecon 4, and you're stumped for who else's name to put down in that spot on your
Hugo nomination ballot, you can feel free to write in "Kyle Aisteach." :)
For those who've always wondered what
the John W. Campbell Award is all about -- and those who had never heard of it before now -- it's an award given to a promising writer whose first professional publication occurred in the previous two calendar years. That means this is the first year I'm eligible (with a single short story to my credit). Hopefully next year I'll have a bit more of a track record. It's given out alongside the
Hugo Awards (and shares a ballot with the Hugos), but it is not technically a Hugo.
Also, I'd encourage you to take a moment to look at
the eligibility website. You might just be surprised that somebody whose work you've been reading recently is actually a new writer, and eligible for the award.
Even if you're not planning to attend Renovation but you would like to vote for the Hugos and the Campbell, you can
purchase a "Supporting" membership before January 31 and still be able to submit a nominating ballot.
Oh, and, obviously, "Too Close for Comfort" is eligible for the "Short Story" Hugo, both of you who read it. :)
