The End of Wall Street's Boom" by Michael Lewis, author of the 1980s Wall Street expose, Liar's Poker. It's a bit technical (because, after all, if it this stuff was easy to understand, the house of cards wouldn't have gotten built in the first place) and rambles into the personal quite a lot, but it does explain how some people who saw the financial meltdown coming knew it was coming (and how they profited from it).
Now if I could just figure out a way to short-sell the luxury condominiums they're building on spec by Caltech...
