Last week, On January the 6th, the Israeli team, Bnei Hasharon, was set to play a game in Ankara, Turkey against the home team as part of the Eurocup competition.
When Bnei Hasharon entered the court, the home team's radical fans started cursing the Israeli team and its Jewish players, put up terrorist flags and even threw shoes, lighters, coins and even filled bottles on the players.
Nevertheless, Bnei Hashron kept its sportive manner and sent its opening 5 for the jump ball to begin the game. Upon the jump ball the fans stormed the court and put Bnei Hasharon's players and staff’s life in danger. Bnei Hasharon ran into the locker rooms and stayed there for more than one and a half hours before the police was able to remove the angry crowd from the arena. The players were in complete shock as they have never experienced such a frightening event. Although the fans were removed the shouts and screams from outside the arena were still clearly heard by the staff and players.
About 2 hours after the game was originally supposed to start Bnei Hasharon was called back to start the game. The team refused to do so as they claimed the game lost all of its sportive value because the players were still afraid for their lives.
Surprisingly, the referees ruled a technical loss for Bnei Hasharon, instead for the Turkish team, basing it on the Israeli team's refusal to play.
Bnei Hasharon sent a request to ULEB, the organizing body of the Eurocup, to reverse that decision and was even willing to play a rematch in a neutral ground without fans.
Today, the 11th of January, ULEB ruled that the technical loss for Bnei Hasharon remains, and they even added to that ludicrous decision a fine of 50,000 Euros to Bnei Hasharon !
