Thoughts on Legend of Korra

We just watched the latest (I think) episode of Legend of Korra, “The Aftermath.” I’m continuing to really enjoy this show for a number of reasons.

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD

Pacing: One of the things that bugged me was the love triangle between Korra, Mako, and Asami. It felt, not necessarily cliche, but easy. It’s an oft-repeated trope, one that could ( Read more... )

That doesn't surprise me at all. Airbending in particular keeps reminding me of tai chi.

*puts on nerd hat* Actually the waterbending is based on Tai Chi (it's really easier to see the technique in Book One in TLA as Aang is learning how to waterbend alongside Katara in the first episodes). Airbending is based on Baguazhang.

(And I'll stop myself from commenting and squeeing all over this post since I could talk about both series all day long since they're just so amazing.)

There was more animal bonding in Avatar? I like the polar bear dog, but so far, the animal companions just seem to be there, and I find myself wondering what their role is in the larger worldbuilding picture.

ATLA was really fantastic at keeping track of companion animals. If they weren't in a given scene, you usually had a good idea where they were! The show also got a humanitarian award for a particular episode in season two, 'cuz wow. If you are particularly fond of animals and/or triggered by animal harm, you may well end up bawling throughout the episode.

Oh cool, thank you! And see my comment above - squeeing and flailing are welcome :-) Part of what I love about blogging is getting to share this stuff and talk to other people about it.

Baguazhang and taijiquan are similar in that they're both internal martial arts (neigong) as opposed to the external martial arts like shaolin, hung gar, praying mantis, etc. Chen style taijiquan uses a lot of circular movements, but waterbending is based more on Yang style. (I study Chen style taijiquan.)

Baguazhang involves circular walking, as bagua refers to the eight trigrams that surround the taiji diagram (aka "yin yang").

It gets better: the PTB were so serious about getting the styles and movements right that they went to the point of teaching the staff; Sifu Kisu was a martial arts consultant for the length of ATLA and eventually got a character based on him. I haven't actually checked Korra's credits, but I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed on :3
