The Obesity “Epidemic”

So Michelle Obama is launching the Let’s Move Campaign to eliminate the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.  “[O]ne in three kids are overweight or obese, and we’re spending $150 billion a year treating obesity-related illnesses. So we know this is a problem, and there’s a lot at stake.”  (Source)

I wonder if it's a question of age: when they get out of elementary school, recess goes away (which is an excellent place to burn calories, what with the running around at high speeds).

Thanks. Like I'm not self-conscious about this one already :-P

The loss of recess might have an effect. I know me moving into a desk job certainly had an impact on my health. But most of the time, I don't see actual research or references in these discussions.

Children gain more weight during summer vacation than the school year.

Mine work the other way around. Summer vacation they're nonstop playing, but as we move toward the colder months, they spend more time inside and aren't as active.
