Originally I must admit I was very skeptical about going to this event. I haven't been to a big festival concert since I left high school. But the promise of some older bands being there and the low ticket prices really got me interested.
After a long night spent at Johnny Bungalows birthday gala. I came home at about 3am and then got caught up in some late night shenanigans. So at about 7am i realized it was pointless to go to sleep for an hour so i would have to suck it up.
I headed towards baltimore and stopped at a Kinko's -- I ran off 250 more Mishaps fliers and then cut them so I had 1000. I was on Terry's porch at 8am -- looking haggard -- but also somewhat bushytailed.
We pissed around some and walked towards Walgreen's-- bought sunscreen and contact re-wetting drops -- which I ended up needing every 20 minutes for the entire day.
Grabbed a cab --headed to the stadium -- and bought the first of several 7$ beers.
I began my all day Mishap pamphleting escapade. Hopefully, some of the goons I gave them to show up for the damn show June 19th. At first, I was exclusively giving them to the sluttier looking ladies -- after half an hour or so Terry & I expanded our flier drop to include every man woman & child with a free hand.
The bands started -- the first band OMG were local and just so so -- The next bands were The Bravery, Louis XIV, Interpol. Also really lacked a lot of luster. Fed up we headed to the street stage and saw Citizen Cope -- the first good act of the day.
We got back inside and They Might Be Giants took the stage. They put on a rousing geek rock performance--not really my scene -- but it was a good show -- the first for the main stage. We then started meeting up with our friends: Haylene & Pam, Craig, Julie and some friends. Matt, Tonya & Jen.
Echo & The Bunnymen took the stage and I jumped up because this was the first of the 4 acts I wanted to see. The band started playing and the sound was rotten, they left the stage. They tried to restart souded bad again and walked off stage -- never to return. I was fucking pissed and started yelling bullshit really really loud.
Garbage was the next act -- they were awesome -- Shirley Manson looked great and they played an awesome set -- the only downside to their act was Shirley looked to good and lots of guys with hard ons kept bumping into me as I moved up front.
The next act was the New York Dolls. They were incredible. Pretty much they played strictly for the older crowd. The guys in the band looked like death walking -- it is amazing what years of a hard lifestyle can do to you. They looked haggard but they sounded tremendous and made me very wistful.
Social Distortion came out next and blew everyone else away. They were amazing they ripped thru old and new songs. Reach For The Sky, Story of My Life, Sick Boy, Prsion Bound & covers of Ring Of Fire & Under My Thumb. I called pretty much every one I knew during the performance because I was so psyched. I moved into a group of guys in there mid forties and we just rocked. I got so overwhelmed seeing them again -- that I think a tear may have made my way down my cheek when they left the stage.
Good Charlotte was up next -- so I left the stadium. We went over to the buzz tent for a while. I hate techno music -- so all I did was bitch the whole time we were in there. Got back in time to see the end of Good Charlotte -- who sucked -- and I started yelling "You Suck" at the stage -- therefore offending every teenage girl withing 25 feet of me. They do suck though and especially after seeing Social D and NY Dolls -- you can really see thru Good Charlotte's poseur act.
The rain began
Billy Idol came on and TORE THE FUCKING ROOF OFF OF THE DAMN PLACE -- we was fucking incredible. That man doesn't looked like he has aged a day -- he was jumping around shirtless -- hitting all the high notes. Doing the sneer -- you name it -- he was intense. Not bad for a man approaching 50 with a fake hip. He did Eyes Without a Face, Rebel Yell, White Wedding (which he really made me feel old with --when he said "Here is a Song From 1982") then he did some Generation X covers which really maded me stoked (I mean Gen X is almost 30 years old - so it was bitching to hear "Ready Set Go")
He closed with Mony Mony -- during the chorus he inserted the phrase "Get the money motherfucker, get laid get fucked" and the crowd chanted it back
I was amazed -- it was incredible to see how the older acts really really upstaged the younger acts. I love that.
Coldplay was supposed to be up next -- I am not a huge fan of these guys -- but I was willing to watch
Then the downpour happened -- the lightning came -- we all got separated
Terry and I jumped into a cab and went to Jim Page's 30 birthday bash in Fell's Point. Got some BOP (which is always good -- but tastes divine if you have gone a whole day without eating)
Said good night
Jim: why are you leaving so early
Tim: I have been up since Friday morning, I am cold, wet, tired & i have a lady friend coming to my house at midnight.
Jim: Understood!!
Terry and I got another cab --I got my car -- came home -- curled up with ___ and fell asleep.
I dodn't know if Coldplay & The Foo Fighters ever came on -- I don't care -- I saw the acts I paid for and was quite happy.
