I've been thinking a lot lately about the second amendment. It says "Hey, own a gun, it's your right ( Read more... )

Begin Part Three

"We, a nation that was formed through overthrowing a corrupt government power, gave ourselves the protection we needed to do the same thing in the future, if the need ever came up.

So, how does the Civil War fit into this? In a way, we became England.

See, slavery was bad. I'm not gonna denie that. Totally very bad.

But, the South says "hey, we don't like your new legislation. We need slaves, without them, our economy crumbles. And if our economy crumbles, your all naked. YOU WEAR OUR COTTON!"

"so."

"Okay, that's cool. But um, we're just gonna leave now. This whole America thing was cool and all, but much like we as a whole left England, we're gonna leave you."

"Um.... no." SCHMACK!

Although the war was close, the North wins. What does this mean?

The one time that we really tried to tell the government we weren't down with what it was doing, it all but ignored us. And when we tried to protest by forming our own country, they slaughtered us. (By "us" I'm reffering to fellow Americans.)"

Jimmy, people were being ENSLAVED. By your logic, I could say that we had no right to go tell the Nazis they couldn't invade France or gas their Jews. After all, what right do we have to tell Europeans how to handle their affairs? No one has the right to oppress another people, anywhere. The right to swing my fist ends where another man's face begins. Now I know what your gonna say "But you were against the war in Iraq! That was to stop oppression." I was against the war because I thought it was practically and strategically unsound to go in their alone, not because I thought Saddam had the right to gas his people. I think oppression is wrong, but we also can't be everywhere at once, and we need to pick our battles. The Civil War was a battle in our own backyard, and it was one we needed to fight. Oh, and by the way, remember what I said before about how I thought the American Revolution was unjustified? Well, if we hadn't revolted, the Civil War probably wouldn't have been that much of a problem, what with the British Empire being the very first Western nation to outlaw slavery and America being the very last.

Sorry Sean, but this one goes to Jimmy. He did mention that it was a bad thing, and we all know that enslavement was a bad thing since thats been clear. But the south felt they needed slaves in order to do their job. Besides, the war wasn't even about slaves. It was mostly about the differences in economical structures. Most people in the south didn't even own a slave, and only 4 owners in the entire south owned over 500 slaves. Yes, slavery was a bad thing, but to their knowledge, it was sometimes a necessary thing... That and Sean, I wasn't even sure what you were trying to say.
