So, I had promised earlier that the Inn... the bug-riddled, hooker haven with beds akin to rock gardens... would come into play once more... and it did... ironically enough, as the "hero" in a very unexpected chapter in the perfect week.
Somewhere after 4 a.m. Valerie woke to a very loud banging on her door Sunday, and a male voice calling out her name. Her first thought, she said, that I was playing a joke on her (it took me two days to realize that she said it almost as if it would have been nice... I am a slow learner) and she opened the door to find a firefighter urging her to grab her essentials, that there was a bomb scare (I would see on the news a short bit later that a car had been ablaze in the parking lot and someone said it might have a significant amount of ammo in it). Thus she ended up at McDonald's having a cup of coffee and decided to call me to talk. Well, not being quite the fool as I am reputed to be, I hinted that if she felt uncomfortable she could come over ! And, after a few minutes, I talked her into coming straight from Mickey D's to my house. After talking awhile we decided to go to a swap meet.... which was really a blast... we did not really find anything, but got to people watch (including really bad Mexican karaoke singers) and talk... and she got to work on the one thing she had totally forgotten in coming to Phoenix... to get a little tan ! The walk led to hunger, which led to Wendy's and back to the room so she could at last shower. That evening we talked again, this time a little more about the oddities and coincidences which led to us even meeting, much less all that took place.
One more incredible day with Valerie. In all honestly, more of an adventure in eight days than I ever would have expected in the remainder of a life that has always been about solitude. More fun that I deserve and the best damned company ever. When I finally got home Monday, mentally and physically exhausted, I truly felt like I could not have milked more out of the week (or monopolized more of her time) without handcuffs and a hidden room. Seriously, it is almost impossible to imagine a better way for things to end.
