I know, we all age, but... Tommy Lee, L' enfant terrible drummer of Mötley Crüe, cannot possibly be 50 years old. Damn, it seems just yesterday that the video for "Too Young to Fall in Love" was released and I saw these over made-up freaks in this strange theatrical video and thought "These guys will be gone in a month !" . Now, more than 28 years later, I think I have played "Shout at the Devil" as much as any song in my little metal library.
I only had the pleasure of seeing Crüe perform live once. December 10, 1997 they played America West Arena with Hed PE as their opening act (my tiny shriveled brain wants to say my date's name was Janet). I got really amped up for the show and it was incredible and I nearly screamed myself mute... all the while wearing the plastic pig mask they were selling (it was on the last album's cover art and I was.... well... as I said, "amped"). The show's end was not so cool... toward the end the members of Hed PE tried to join Mötley Crüe on stage and security stopped them and next thing we knew there were chairs flying everywhere. We did get out in once piece and I was still singing Crüe songs for days after.
Anyhow, happy fiftieth birthday, Tommy. I know there is no chance in hell a rock icon sees this blog, but, I am one of the many that still shouts at the devil, still primal screams, and still wishes Rock Star Supernova could have become something (ya needed Dilana baby... even if she might sometimes overshadow you). Just know that there are a few old fossils (just turned 52 myself) that find themselves feeling thirty years younger, if only for a moment, any time they hear you guys. Love ya.
