Asked a couple of techies (no answers yet), but figured I'd "widen the net" a bit in hopes of finding someone interested in replying--- };-)
When I boot my tower, it's recently started taking a LONG time to "fully" boot, with multiple video "resets" during boot-up (far more than normal for XP, and many more than it used to do). Once it's climbed up to the desktop (which sometimes suffers one or more video "resets" before everything in the tray has loaded and settled down) it will sometimes do one or more 10-second "random freezes". Everything stops and won't respond; no keyboard, no mouse, and then the video "resets" (blips to black, then the video comes back) and the machine "unfreezes". This may also happen during Web page changes (clicking a link or scrolling to a new page), and last night, during an Acrobat Reader page view, it only showed black boxes where the "minimize/restore/close" and "up and down" scroll arrows are.
I don't know if the motherboard is going south (this is the 2nd one; first one died with different symptoms), or if it might be the video card (an nVidea Geforce 128mb unit, with a fan) that's packing up.
AMD Athlon64 (early style) with an Asus MB; 1 gig RAM, nVidea chipset. HDD diags clean; no viruses or spyware. Viewsonic LCD digital monitor. Does the same using VGA or DVI output.
Ideas?
EDIT: Local professional tech/friend (via phone) said it sounds like the video card is failing. I'd still like another comment or ten before I blow moolah I don't have on getting another one... }>-p
