Back from Las Vegas

Went to Las Vegas last week for a conference on the LIMS (Lab Information management System) software that I manage. First time in Las Vegas, what an amazingly tacky place. There's Vegas, and Vegas.

The strip is tacky, true, but like all tourist traps, that's expected, and the scale of the spectacle is worth experiencing at least once.

I do gamble, so the piles of garish tourists bringing their money to the poker tables after watching WPT on TV makes me just drool with anticipation.

however, just minutes away from the strip are beautiful canyons, mountains, and desert. Take a drive (or, my preference, rent a bike and ride) out of town a bit, and that area of Nevada is gorgeous. Valley of Fire, Red Rock canyon, Lake Meade are all worth seeing.

off the strip are casinos and restaurants that cater to locals, and are well worth the few minutes of travel.

Vegas cabbies are the best corrupt guys on earth, getting paid by clubs, restaurants and etc. to take people there, but if you tell the guy "find me a nice off-strip place to eat, that serves a good X", by God they'll get you there.

So to me Vegas is nature by day, good food on tap, and party/casino at night. if all you do is the Strip, then yeah, tacky is a good description.

The icon photo on this post is from Red Rock Canyon, just outside of vegas - that's a rented harley.

I was only on the strip, no time to take side trips, unfortunately.
