With things back to normal, Jim fell back into his usual schedule. He admittedly wasn't seeking out certain people he had messed with during the week, but beyond that, things were pretty much back to normal With Sam off with Pam for a little while, Jim spent the free time getting a couple of things done before finally finding a table in the ( Read more... )

Veronica, for her part, had been more than happy to stay away from the majority of people, aside from those work and school forced her to see. There'd been that auction the other day, though, which she'd signed up for before she'd known she was going to be in a bad mood, and Council nominations circling back around. It had slowly started to right her mood, and when she spotted Jim today, frown though she might, she headed over and arched an eyebrow. "Man, you guys are prolific."

He was about to give up the search when he realized who was behind him. Turning his head and glancing up, he bit back a grin.

"Long time no see, Mars," he said. Of everyone he'd seen all switched up, he had to admit seeing her like she was was probably the funniest. At least, really, until Pam had mentioned the stuff she'd spoken to her about. It was enough to make him think he should sort of take it easy on her. "Feeling better, or are you here to invite me to another party?"

Of course, being intent on being nicer didn't mean he wasn't going to get one or two jokes in or have any interest in deleting what was now on his computer.

"If by party you mean your funeral, then yes," Veronica said dryly, turning away to look at the shelf. Just because her mood had lifted didn't mean she was in a good one. Nothing on the bookshelf looked worth her while, though. Just her luck. At least it wasn't giving her more of those books about the Winchester boys.

He stood up straight, grinning faintly. That was the Veronica he knew, alright. He wasn't expecting anything else, really, since everyone else was normal, but it was good to be sure of it. "Wow. See, right there. You don't know how much I missed that witty banter. Not that I didn't enjoy seeing you put on a tea party, don't get me wrong."

"I know you did," she replied evenly, arching an eyebrow at him. "I was temporarily insane. Doesn't make me an amnesiac." She couldn't entirely blame him, of course, not really. In his shoes, she would have done the same thing, and she had no doubt of it. That didn't mean she had to be pleased with him. During the thing itself, she'd been cheery as hell, if more than usually anxious. Now she had nothing to be but annoyed.

"Oh, good," he said, turning to start walking back to the work he was doing. Over his shoulder, he added, casually, "Because I was going to offer you that footage I got if you wanted to remember."

He didn't doubt for a second she had to know he'd never just erase that kind of stuff. They'd known each other way too long for that.

"Only if you want me to burn it," she deadpanned, "and I don't mean to disc. That's one precious moment I'm not looking to collect."

Swallowing hard, she didn't move to follow him, not in the mood to continue this particular line of teasing. She could take jokes with the best of them, but this, what the island had done to her, she couldn't see as a joke. Sure, it was funny to everyone else, and she knew she'd have been laughing, too, if it hadn't been her, but she was sick of being used like a puppet by people and islands alike. It had happened too many times before life here for it to sit easy with her now, in too many ways she didn't ever want to explain.

He still didn't quite know what he was going to do with the stuff. He had promised River he'd have it if she ever wanted to tease Mal about it. He was pretty sure he'd be made to delete it, then.

"I still don't really know who was worse, you or Mal," he said, tapping his pen against his notebook as he looked thoughtful. "I bet River saved that picture he colored in. I'm just glad I was passed over this time around."

He didn't want to think of last time, for a lot of reasons. At least when the stuff happened to them, they were nice people. He had been a jerk.

Veronica shot him a look, brow arching. "Bully for you."

The next time he woke up as a woman, a ten year old or a squirrel, she was taking so many pictures, she could plaster the goddamn Compound with them. Now, though, she was done. Sliding a book forcefully back onto the shelf, she started away. It wasn't like there was any point staying for this anyway.

Jim looked over when he heard her slam the book in. It was only then he realized she was actually angry. He stood up as she started walking off. He liked messing around, sure, but he also knew when he had gone too far.

"Hey, Veronica, wait," he said, already jogging to try and stop her. "I was just messing around. I didn't mean anything by it. I'll stop, I promise."

Tight-lipped and stony-faced, she stopped and turned, arms folded, an air of expectation hanging over her. Whether she was waiting for an apology or the next joke, she wasn't entirely sure. "No, why should you? I get it," she said dryly. "What's more fun than the misfortunes of others?"

Maybe she couldn't, for all her trying, control everything. She'd thought she could at least control herself.

Jim let out a sigh, shoulders slumping. Now he just felt kind of bad, which was pretty much what he could see she had been aiming for.

"I'm sorry, alright?" he said, even though technically he could point out she'd never been especially kind about the kind of stuff that's happened to him when she was spared. "And for the record, I only have the stuff I taped because I think River wants to tease Mal about it."

Veronica considered that, arms tight against her, sullen still. "I guess that's punishment enough," she allowed, "since he's going to kick your ass for that." Not that the thought of this improved her mood any.

Alright, a little.

"River and I have an agreement of protection," he said, mouth during up in a half grin. He knew he wasn't going to be the one to show him. That was all River in general. "But okay, I deserve that. Are we cool now, at least?"

He didn't want to be fighting over something like this. He hadn't meant the action to be malicious in any way. That, at least, she had to know without him saying so.

Veronica shrugged. Forgiving and forgetting had never been easy for her, and the lingering resentment made it difficult to say she was fine. Still, she might have been in a mood to lash out, but that didn't mean she wanted to fight. "Sure."

It wasn't often she didn't know what else to say, but there was no further quip to be made without starting a fight and no confession she cared to give. She'd opened up enough before; she wasn't about to start sharing now.

He decided to just settle on believing she meant that, though he never quite could tell. She still looked a little annoyed, anyway.

"And hey, you can rag on me all you want next time something weird happens to me," he added, just because he didn't like the silence that followed her agreeing. "Which I am sure is just a matter of time in this place."
