Jim had been glad they left the party early, if only because of how the weather had suddenly changed. By the time they got to the hut, it'd just started to get a little worse, and colder, too. The warmth of the hut had been more than welcome ( Read more... )

Pam had headed right for the bedroom, removing her coat, scarf and gloves in the moments before Jim joined her, and had just sat down on the edge of the bed to begin taking off her boots when he came in. She paused, though, to grin up at him, letting out a quiet laugh as she nodded. She wasn't all that tired herself, but she could see why Sam would be.

"She had a long night," she replied knowingly, though not without a hint of amusement as well. "I don't think I ever made it to midnight at that age." Then again, with all the excitement, not to mention food, there had been, it wasn't too difficult to see why staying awake had been possible.

"I think all the excitement got to her," he said, putting aside his wet coat and hat to dry. Once he was down to just his first layer, he moved to sit next to her. "She'll probably sleep through the night, though. I've never seen her run around so much."

"Yeah, she got pretty busy," she agreed, letting both of her boots fall to the floor before she turned to face him better, one leg tucked up underneath her on the bed. "I don't blame her. That was some party." It was all made better, too, by her being alone with him now, but the fact remained that the evening up until then had been a great one.

"You tired too, Beesly?" he asked, teasingly, shooting her a grin. Secretly, he actually hoped not. He wanted to spend some time with her before they went to bed.

Pam let out a short laugh, shaking her head. "No, I think I'm good for a while," she replied slowly, then cast him a sideways glance. "I mean, unless you want to go to bed. Don't let me keep you up."

Mentally, she facepalmed at that choice of words. She was absolutely not, though, going to tell him that that was what she said.

Jim had a very hard time keeping himself from not saying it. It seemed like that phrase was in his head now, and he doubted it'd ever go away.

"You left yourself wide open," he pointed out instead, unable to hold back at least his laugh. The statement he said wasn't much better, but it was too late to take that back now.

Pam, however, couldn't hold back a laugh at his remark, albeit a short one. Following her own statement, it was just too fitting. Still, having said it to him once before herself, she almost wanted to hear him come back with what they were both obviously thinking.

"Wide open for what?" she asked, raising an eyebrow and trying not to look as amused as she really was. She just couldn't help herself.

"Oh, no. You're not getting me to say that," he said, with a firm shake of his head in case she needed that, too. "I'm not starting off my year with that. It's got to be bad luck or something."

"Say what?" she asked, feigning an innocent expression. It was difficult, with how hard she was trying not to laugh, but for the most part, she managed. "You've lost me, Halpert, I really don't have any idea what you're talking about." And that was about as far from the truth as it was possible to be, but that was beside the point.

Jim rolled his eyes, letting him fall back so he was lying down on the bed instead, resting his head on his hand.

"Nevermind," he replied, unable to keep himself from laughing now. She wasn't going to get him to say it now that he made a big deal saying it wouldn't.

Pam let out an exaggerated sigh as she pulled herself up onto the bed beside him, shaking her head despite the wry grin still on her face. "You can just say it, you know," she assured him, though she was obviously at least somewhat teasing. "I won't, like, judge you or anything."

Actually, she probably would, but only because he'd made fun of her that one time she'd said it. It was only fair.

"You're a terrible influence, Beesly," he said, biting back his smile now. She also had to know by now how stubborn he could be. "I'll pass. I'm sure you can figure out what I could've said if you really think about it yourself."

"I try," she replied brightly, in response to the first remark he'd made. "It's not like you're an especially good influence, either. You're the one who made fun of me when I said it that one time." She was going to remember that, too, both as a reason not to say it again, and to get him to say it someday.

"I'm definitely the best kind of influence," he insisted, waving the mere suggestion he wasn't off. It was too bad he couldn't hold back a grin saying that. "You should know that by now."

Pam shrugged, mock-serious, as if the subject took a good deal of thought, but her expression softened a little when she looked back at him, almost fond, if somewhat teasingly so. "Alright, I'll give you that one, Halpert," she replied thoughtfully. "After all, I don't know how I would've survived working at Dunder Mifflin without you."

Jim's own expression seemed to lighten at what she said. In truth, she'd been the only reason why he'd stayed. He knew better than to say that outloud, though, because where she was from, he had left, probably for that very reason.

He didn't dwell on that, though. Instead, he found himself smiling. "Yeah, I know the feeling."

He shifted so he was facing her a few moments later, catching her gaze for a moment, before leaning in to kiss her gently. He had felt the same way on the island, too, in a way. When she hadn't been around, things just hadn't been the same.
