The damage was extensive. Jim wasn't really surprised, considering how much noise had been going on while they huddled in Serenity. It was a lucky break they'd been saved, because who knew what could have found them had they been outside any longer ( Read more... )

Pam had no idea what to do any more. She was running on no sleep and very little food, but she couldn't bring herself to sit still, nor could she even stomach the thought of eating.

What had happened yesterday was completely insane and they could've been killed, or at least seriously hurt. And what about Samantha? What if they hadn't been rescued in time? What about next time? There was always the possibility that it could happen again.

Jim was torn between clinging to Samantha like she'd somehow get hurt if he let her go and getting up and putting her in her crib to take care of Pam. He finally decided on the latter, since the baby was fast asleep, and got up and gently placed her down, covering her with her blanket. She had had it just as rough as they did, hardly sleeping at all because the noise kept scaring her.

He turned to Pam, who was facing away from him. He looked down, sighing, before heading over and slowly, carefully wrapping his arms around her.

She couldn't help jumping when his arms slid around her waist. She turned around quickly, her heart pounding in her throat, then immediately looked embarrassed when she found him looking back at her.

"Sorry," she murmured, reaching up to gently tug the charm of her necklace back and forth along the chain. "I guess I'm a little jumpy."

He shook his head, to show it wasn't a big deal. She looked so scared, and it made Jim ache to see her like that.

"Why don't you lie down a little while?" he asked, softly, his hand reaching up to touch her cheek. "You must be exhausted. Or is there anything you need me to do or get?"

Her head dropped down and her shoulders drooped as she let out a heavy sigh. "I don't know what to do anymore, Jim. I can't- I can't even think-" Her voice broke and, before she knew it, she was crying.

It was the first time she really broke down since it happened. To be honest, he felt like falling apart too, but he kept it together for both Pam and Samantha. He drew her to him, holding her in his arms, not knowing what else to do but to show he was there for her.

She didn't even know what to say anymore as she buried her face against the front of his shirt. Her shoulders shook as she sobbed.

"I don't think I've ever been so scared in my entire life," she cried.

"I know," he murmured, pressing a kiss against her temple. "But it's all over now, Pam. We're okay. Everyone we know is alive."

He carefully led her to the bed, thinking it would be better for them to sit for a while. She had to be as tired as he was. He hated the helpless feeling he had; there was nothing he could to do make this all better.

She couldn't even put up a fight when he guided her to the bed, making her sit down. The minute she was seated, she could barely stay up, her eyes drooping as she stared at her hands.

"It was just so- so crazy," she sniffed, scrubbing at her face with her fists.

"Yeah," he said, rubbing the side of his neck himself. His other hand kept Pam steady, rubbing her back slowly. "I don't know what to even think anymore. I just..."

He trailed off. Had anything come at them, he would have given his life to save them. He didn't say that, of course, but it didn't mean it wasn't true. And if this happened again, he'd feel the same way. They meant everything to him.

She leaned into him and dropped her head to his shoulder.

"Me either," she agreed, her voice muffled by his shirt. She couldn't even start to think about what she'd do if she lost Jim or Samantha.

He sighed quietly, not even knowing what to say anymore. Honestly, he didn't know if he could ever leave Pam's side, on the off chance this might happen again. The idea of being separated terrified him.

Instead of letting that line of thinking keep going, he gently took her hand, nudging her toward the middle of the bed with some effort. "Here, lay down, okay?"

He got up, slowly heading to gently lift Sam from her crib again to bring back to bed. Really, he just needed to be by the two of them right now. He didn't know if that feeling would ever go away.

"Where are you going?" she asked as he got up. "Don't-" She cut herself off when she saw him coming back with the baby in his arms and curled up under the blankets.

"Don't leave me," she begged. "Don't leave us."

He felt the ache grow when he heard the desperation in her voice. He carefully laid down, putting Sam between them, and pulling them both closer.

"I'd never leave you," he promised, his voice soft as he found her hand under the covers and laced his fingers with hers. Sam didn't stir, but seemed to relax when she was settled between them. "Okay? I'll always protect you two. You're - you both mean everything to me."

Pam squeezed his hand tightly and nodded. "I know. I just.. I don't know what I'd do if- if something happened."

"Let's just be thankful nothing did happen to us," he said, quietly. He looked down at Sam, leaning forward to kiss his daughter on the forehead. "We just...need to stick together. As a family."
