Jim hadn't slept right all night. He tossed and turned the few hours he had that Sam wasn't keeping them awake, eventually giving up on sleep entirely once morning came around. He sat up and stretched his arms over his head with a yawn, rubbing his likely red eyes - damn lack of sleep really was getting to him - with a sigh. When he put the hand ( Read more... )

"Shhhh, you'll wake the baby," she muttered, rolling onto her other side as she tried to bat at him with one hand.

"And you'll wake me, so shut up."

"I-I really think you should -"

Goldie stood up, her tail swishing slowly back and forth, smacking fairly hard against the wall. When she yawned a few seconds later, Jim could hear what sounded like a rumbling noise.

Purring? Getting ready to eat? Who the hell knew.

"Get up. Get up right now."

Sam, hearing the commotion, did, in fact, wake up, and started to cry as Jim scrambled to get his feet up on the bed and close to his body.

"What, Jim?" she asked, angry now that he'd woken up the baby. "At least you could get up and make her stop crying."

She pushed herself up into a sitting position and rubbed at her eyes. "What is wrong with you?"

"I-I-I-"

Had he not been in shock, he likely would have thought to wave the stupid wand again until Goldie was normal. He was, though, and all he could do was clutch the wand and watch as the cat put both paws up onto the bed, clearly attempting to do her usual morning routine of lying with them for a while.

The bed sunk under the cat's new weight, and so did Jim's stomach.

Pam glared at him, waiting for an answer. "Are you going to get the baby or not?" she asked. "You're the one that woke her up." She didn't look towards the foot of the bed until she felt it dip under the weight of something heavy.

"WHAT THE- WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CAT?"

Sam's wailings grew louder and Goldie just seemed to look as puzzled as a cat could look.

"I didn't do it!" he said, defensively, even though it wasn't true. "I- I mean, not on purpose! Goldie, down! Bad cat!"

He looked wide-eyed at Pam. "Quick! Think of a magic word!"

His mind had managed to go completely blank.

"You did this?!" she gaped at him for over a minute, before scooting out of the bed and rushing to the baby.

"What did you do, Jim?!"

"I didn't do - I was just -!"

Goldie was nearly about to leap up, which would most certainly break the thing under her weight. What he did next was instinctual.

"Uh. Hocus...pocus!" he said, closing his eyes as he waved the stick again. The bright flash of energy shot out again, and for a moment the whole area around the bed seemed covered in wispy smoke. He cracked open one eye and found Goldie sitting on the bed, staring up at him quizzically.

The normal Goldie.

He dropped the wand immediately.

Pam squeezed her eyes shut and clutched the baby to her chest when there was a loud POP.

"What was that?!" She didn't dare open her eyes again.

He tried to calm himself down. That had been far too scary for so early in the morning. He looked between the cat and then the wand, eventually reaching out tentatively to pick up the wand again.

"Magic?" he guessed, his voice sounding distant and kind of dazed.

"What do you mean magic?" she asked, finally opening her eyes and squinting against the smoke still curling up from where the cat was. The baby was still crying, despite Pam's efforts to calm her down.

"Magic," he repeated, as if she ought to be able to just figure it out. "I-I think I get how it works. Wait -"

He waved the wand, muttering some random magic phrase, and right next to the cat a bouquet of flowers appeared. Jim stared at them in shock.

"...I-It worked!"

Pam blinked owlishly as she inched closer to the bed.

"What the hell, Jim? Where did you get that?"

"It actually worked," he said to himself, still shocked. "I found it under the covers, I had been sleeping on it and - I don't know! This thing works!"

"What the hell?" She stared at him, dumbstruck, as the baby continued to wail. Soon enough, the cat joined in, meowing and yowling, obviously looking for attention as well.

"You've got to be- What the hell?"

Jim was actually giddy. He was holding in his hands a tool of complete mischief. It was like the island had gifted him with the best ability ever.

And as much as he wanted to see what else the thing could do, he forced himself to calm down and head over to see if he could help Pam with Samantha. He kissed her head, then paused, thinking. A slow grin formed and he mumbled some kind of ridiculous 'magic' phrase again and made a little stuffed duck appear in his hands.

"Here, Sam. Look at the duckie," he said, trying to get her attention onto the animal to calm her down.
