On Friday I took the first real step on the road to my Vespa dream - the CBT. If you're unfamiliar with two-wheeled motorised vehicles everyone has to do a Compulsary Basic Training before setting out on a scooter or motorbike whether you intend to stay on a 50cc twist-and-go or go all the way to a big old superbike. I did it on a 125cc Honda and was joined by this 16 year old lad who was of course doing his on the 50cc. We did all the maneuvering around cones etc with me being slightly behind most of the time for having to handle a bike with clutch and gears. In the end this was my downfall, to cut a long story short (the CBT takes all day) I failed to get the certificate because when we went out on the road I kept stalling nearly every time we stopped. That was really frustrating because I thought I'd got it back in the carpark my riding was fine and I was just a little shaky with starting off but got some really nice smooth starts there, I thought this could only improve with practice. However the carpark was flat so I hadn't had any chance to try an uphill start, I stalled about 6 times on one set off traffic lights that just happened to be on a hill and had a huge queue of traffic waiting behind me, as well as poor Sam on his moped.
Sam got the CBT, as a young lad whose grandfather has always been into motorcycles, he breezed through on the twist-and-go. I'm gong back next Friday to try again.
