book update

Just finished In Fire Forged, the 5th Honorverse anthology. I am in absolute awe at Timothy Zahn's capabilities at writing tie-ins. He is the absolute master of tie-ins. (Yes, I've read the Thrawn trilogy.) I've got this theory of why gen for certain fandoms isn't popular and it comes down to official tie-in novels and short stories filling the niche for quality things-like-the-canon. Of course if the tie-ins suck or they aren't exploring the aspects of the series one would like explored, that's where genfics come in.

Jane Lindskold, on the other hand, not so much. I know she's bff with DW, which is why she gets invited to the anthologies, but I'm not really enthused with the track of canon she's pursuing.

Weber's contribution this time was the story of Hawkwing's raid on the Casimir Depot. I have to admit that I like Honor better when she's not running everything in the universe at the same time, which is why I really don't like the Manticoran parts of the books after book 9 as much.

What I really would like is for any of the official anthologies to cover more of the canon characters than just Honor, but I doubt that's going to happen. Sadly, the fandom is tiny (and I'm a pokey ficcer distracted by baseball.)
