Tacocat

Today I came across this article, and I thought to myself, I need to react to that, in a snarky way. But how? And then I realized that thankfully, I still have this space on the Internet, to react in a snarky way without losing Facebook friends, or whatever.

So, the article. It's about Tacocat. I LOVE Tacocat. I am moderately obsessed with the need to see Tacocat, and so far, it appears that the only way this is going to happen is if I go to the Pacific Northwest (because that is almost exclusively where they tour). They had this extremely awesome-sounding gig, which I considered going to, but didn't, in the name of saving money because I am being "responsible*" this year. Ugh.

Anyway, the article. It is on balance, a nice review of their most recent show in Mississippi Studios in Portland (which seems like a pretty cool venue). It nevertheless sent up a few alarm signals. First of all, the description of Tacocat's feminism, "The music is also staunchly feminist in the best way possible-never overbearing and always lighthearted while exuding intelligence and poppiness." You know, as opposed to feminist which is an entirely justified scathing criticism of society, which bums people out, and is therefore, "not the best." Happy feminism. The best kind. Note: I do entirely respect and love Tacocat's feminism. It actually is quite clever and humorous, and yet biting. However, this form of feminism is not *better* than in your face, direct, emotionally laden forms of feminism that makes people (primarily men) uncomfortable.

The other part of the article that made me go, "Heeeeey" was the description of the drummer's "bombastic, high-reach drumming, equally sparkling smile, and twirling, curly blonde hair," given that I have read approximately 1.2 million articles that call out music journalists who insist on commenting on the appearance of female musicians. And, when I googled this to find an example, I discovered, oh, that's right, one of those articles WAS WRITTEN BY MEMBERS OF TACOCAT.

Finally, I highly doubt that Tacocat played their FULL catalog. I think it's substantially more likely they played all of their new album. They have recorded something like 30 songs, and it is extremely rare that a set would have that many songs. One of their albums is not on Spotify (which is actually a little bit annoying because I like to make playlists on Spotify and the Taylor Swift and Tacocat songs, which I bought, only work on my home computer....) However, it's not hard to find the first album. It's on iTunes; it's on their webpage. It's lazy that the author didn't look it up.

Finally, I don't remember ever crowning the sad boy king. But I'm just a stupid girl, so what do I know.

*By the way, I am, on balance, "more" responsible than I was last year. However, I'm starting to do things like justify random trips to Colorado and buy tickets to local shows, basically without restraint.
