[Opposite plot - Wedding time!]

Jill had escaped Mayko. She'd found a dress, put it on and then escaped her friend, not because she wanted to, of course, but because Mayko wanted her to do all this thinking and Jill was tired of thinking. Thinking was hard and she thought it would just be better to get married and not have to think ever again ( Read more... )

John seemed to have been keeping a closer eye on Rodney than usual, but he didn't mind. He just talked at him about all the wonderful plans for his wedding he had, hardly noticing the glazed look in his best friend's eyes. He agreed to everything, though, so as far as Rodney was concerned everything was fine and dandy.

But Rodney had managed to escape to the Compound to get a suit. It had tails. It had a cummerbund, though Rodney didn't know that was what it was called. It had a bow tie. He was real proud of the bowtie. He'd tied it himself.

He loitered around New Atlantis, which seemed pretty empty for the site of a wedding, but John had promised he'd sort everything out so he was probably off doing that right now. And then Jill arrived, which drove any other thoughts right out of Rodney's head.

"You look beautiful," he breathed, opening his eyes wide and determined not to blink in case he missed a second of how beautiful Jill looked.

How in the hell was Rodney constantly escaping John? Or probably not escaping, at the level of...well, stupid he was working at, but maybe more along the lines of wandering off when John wasn't looking.

John hightailed it to New Atlantis as soon as he noticed Rodney was out of sight, and was almost disappointed to see he was right.

There probably wasn't anything scarier than seeing Rodney and Jill looking like they wanted to get married.

"Rodney, what the hell!" John cut his jog (he was not running, thank you) short as soon as he made it to New Atlantis, and hid a look of despair. "You're-- uh. You're not supposed to see the bride before the wedding!"

When Mayko can't find Jill, it's not exactly a stretch to figure out where she's gone, especially since the dress is gone with her. She just hopes she isn't too far behind, because in spite of all her coersion, a wedding on the island is an alarmingly simple thing to put together.

"Jill!" she says when she spots her, just barely in time. "Jill, you can't do this yet! We haven't... finished the guest list or figured out the hors d'oeurves."

"These are all the guests I need!" Jill answered when she saw Mayko, clearly delighted that her friend had decided to come be a part of the wedding after all. And John was there, too, which made the entire event even more special.

Clutching Rodney's hand, Jill glanced around, then frowned suddenly. "Where's Carson? Did anyone tell Carson that we're getting married? He has to be here, he's one of my friends, too, and I want him to give me away."

"This is a wedding," Rodney pointed out to John, beaming. He squeezed Jill's hand, wondering if she felt as excited as he did.

"I...don't think Carson's coming, Jillybeans," he told her. "He didn't seem all that excited when I spoke to him. Maybe Mayko can give you away? I'm so glad you've come," he added, turning the full force of his smile on Jill's friend.

John was more than glad to see Mayko had showed up - he wasn't sure he could deal with or divert the crazy all on his own.

"But you have to do this right," John told Rodney. "I mean, you only get married once, buddy."

"Exactly," says Mayko, though that argument has been failing her all day. And it's really, really unnerving the way Rodney's suddenly smiling at her. "There are... things, that need to be done before you can get married. Important things. Do you even have a photographer? You can't get married without pictures, you'll regret it forever."

For a moment, Jill looked dangerously close to crying when Rodney said that Carson wasn't coming, but then she brightened once again. Mayko and John were such good friends, trying so hard to make sure she and Rodney were happy with their wedding.

"You guys are so great," she said with a smile. "But we can take pictures with our minds! Our memories! Those are just as good as pictures."

"I like mind pictures," Rodney agreed, nodding emphatically. He put his arm around Jill. "Why don't you guys take one right now? How do we look?"

He thought they looked like the swellest about-to-be-married couple ever.

John stared at the pair of them about as long as he could manage, then turned to Mayko. "I have a stunner," he told her quietly, "and I'm not against using it right now."

"I would not stop you," Mayko murmurs back, her eyes still on Jill in case they decide to make another break for it. Oh, she's taking a mind picture of this all right. And she's never going to let Jill forget it. "I'm running out of ideas here."

Jill didn't hear anything at all about a stunner, because she was too busy fussing over Rodney. First she fixed his tie and then she fixed his hair and then she decided that he looked like he hadn't been properly kissed in a few hours and kissing Rodney was far more important than listening to people talk about things. Even if that thing was her wedding.

"Is John going to perform the ceremony?" she asked, voice muffled as she kissed Rodney again.

Rodney got distracted from John and Mayko too, which wasn't difficult considering how beautiful and wonderful Jill was. She was the best kind of distracting. He beamed at her.

"I think so!" he said. "It doesn't matter if people aren't here yet, right? I want to get married right now!" He turned to John and Mayko. "We're ready," he told them.

If there was any kind of alert system John could utilize, he'd have it at the highest it could go right now.

"Uh..." he gave Mayko a panicked look, "I don't...not yet, Rodney."

"I got nothing," she says, giving him a helpless little shrug. "You said you've got a stunner? Maybe some rope to tie them up with and hope they forgive us when they come to their senses?" She's supposed to be smart, but all the schooling in the world couldn't have prepared her for this. "I know it's your wedding day," she says finally, "but you can't be that selfish, you guys. How will people feel when they find out they missed your wedding because you couldn't be bothered to wait for them?"

Taking a break from fawning over Rodney, Jill looked at Mayko, then frowned. "I don't want anyone to think I'm selfish," she admitted reluctantly, biting her lower lip. "I don't want anyone to think anything bad of me ever."

But she really wanted to get married.
