(SPOILERS for those who haven't seen the movie)
Watched Pan's Labyrinth last night. Why the heck is a film where a boy gets his face brutally smashed in with a wine bottle on a kid's network, anyway? I love the rather eerie, almost sinister tone of the movie as well as the dual realities of Ofelia's three tasks and the leftist rebels in the forest battling the brutal fascist Captain Vidal. Mercedes is awesome as a spy for the rebels as well as a protective figure for Ofelia. It was remarkably satisfying when she managed to give Captain Vidal a "Joker smile'.
Visually the film is stunning and the creatures of Ofelia's 'fantasy' world are both darkly beautiful and frightening. The scenes with the
Pale Man always manage to freak me out, DON'T EAT THOSE GRAPES!! The escalating conflict in the real world closely mirrors Ofelia's fantasy world in real and symbolic ways I'm only noticing now, seeing the film for the third time. The ending is gut-wrenching and sad, but open to interpretation. Was the fantasy world real? Or was it all in Ofelia's head? I like to think the former. And did I mention Mercedes is awesome?
