Dad took us to see 9 today. I think we were a little underwhelmed. It's the kind of thing I might watch if it were on tv, and I might buy it for a few dollars from Blockbuster, pre-owned, but it was kind of lacking in story and the visuals were unimpressive, animated by a studio I've never heard of. It wasn't horrible though ( Read more... )

I think it was underwhelming, but I think the art was actually great. I was mostly disappointed with the story and lacking character development. Loved the visuals though. (They clearly compromised on the human animation, but the animation of the rest of the world made up for it in my opinion.)

I am however completely in agreement on the Tim Burton issue. I corrected three people on it in class today. Not to be rude, but just because I want people to realize that Tim Burton isn't the main creative force behind a lot of the things people associate him with. Especially not Coraline, and everyone thinks he did Coraline because it was advertised as 'by the director of Nightmare Before Christmas' whom everyone assumes, of course, is Tim Burton. Henry Selick deserves his due credit. :( And so does the director of 9.

The thing that bothered me most was the textures in a lot of the fabrics, particularly the burlap. It was extremely distracting the way it squashed in tapered areas on the characters. Burlap doesn't do that; I know it makes me sound like a huge snob, but I couldn't stop staring at it. It looked really amatuerish and way too smooth.

I agree on some of the texture, especially on the burlap. It often had those computer animation 'goofs' where a texture moves with the model in a way it would not if it were 'real'. I guess when I talked about 'the art' I really meant the creation of the characters, the overall look anf feel of the film... there are definitely technical booboos littered throughout, but I didn't find them distracting because I was so engaged in exploring the world with the characters.

I don't think Burton has dome much "director"-wise lately.
