10Q: Day 5

Dec 01, 2013 23:51

Have you had any particularly spiritual experiences this past year? How has this experience affected you? "Spiritual" can be broadly defined to include secular spiritual experiences: artistic, cultural, and so forth.

When we visited LACMA one day in Los Angeles, I felt very stupid, especially in the beginning. We started with these exhibits of a supposedly famous Mexican director, who made movies that captured life in Mexico for several decades. Scenes flashed on walls, scripts were displayed in glass cases, posters were framed along the corridor. And I went to each piece by piece, but I was mostly blank, trying desperately to understand and feel something, whatever that feeling people who go to museums pay for.

Then we walked into the European collection.

I saw Picasso, and those geometric paintings by that guy, and landscapes, and sculptures by really famous artists (but since I'm not into art, I can't remember their names now). That was when I felt overwhelmed.

Another exhibit there I liked, entitled As Far As I Could Get, made me think a little. Basically, the photographer would go places, set up his camera on a tripod, click the self timer, and run as fast as he can, to as far as he could get. It made me miss being into photography, and seeing things, and keeping the moments forever. Camera phones and Instagram, I think, ruined it all.
