During the afternoon of what is now known as Black Saturday, CFA volunteer firemen had a surreal experience. Working near Grand Ridge Road in Mirboo North, the men heard the sound of a galloping horse's hooves. Looking up, they saw a grey horse, his mane and tail on fire emerge from the smoke. Thinking, and working, quickly, the dowsed the horse, and saw him gallop on, back into the smoke towards town. They honestly wondered if they'd imagined him.
He was later found sheltering in the brick yard of Grand Ridge Brewery, with other livestock and native animals. Turns out this horse from nowhere who vanished into thin air was a 35 year old former race horse who'd jumped out of his paddock just minutes before his paddock was engulfed by flames.
What a lucky fellow that the firemen were there to put him out!
