forgive me if i've posted this before, but i remember this conversation often. setting: my house. occasion: none; parents randomly invited friends and neighbors over. who: neighbor lady who runs a flower shop. what: her grilling me on my major.

her: you know i think it's terrible how much farm land is being destroyed to make subdivisions these days!

me: uh, yeah. i don't like it either.

her: i mean, small farmers are going out of business!

me: *mental sigh* yes, they are. it's the way our economy and civilization in general is headed, for better or worse. and it's what me and you promote by living in subdivisions just like the one we're sitting in right now. i haven't looked it up, but i'm sure this area used to be farm land.

her: *blank stare for a couple seconds* well, yes, i guess you're right. yes, in fact this *was* a farm a while back!

and that's all she had to say about that. i think i disturbed her just a little. oops. now, a sincere question for any current readers (who am i kidding? you can be old as dirt and still comment); can i please just call my major agronomy? i know, the official name got changed to 'crop and soil environmental sciences' but it's too many syllables and not enough comprehension. i understand their reasons for changing it; being PC and all. but frankly, a brown girl in hijab spouting the word 'agronomy' will certainly do more for the field (hehe; still love sayin it) than that same brown girl saying 'crop and soil bla bla bla.' besides, if i accidentally say CSES, aunties and uncles keep getting real happy and shout "computers!" before i get a chance to explain myself.
