Happy Birthday
When each tenant awakens in the morning, they will discover a small parcel left upon their doorstep with their name written in tight, neat script on a piece of twine, hanging off of the top of the brightly-wrapped red box. Inside, presents. Each tenant will receive a new roll of red tape, and one shiny-wrapped cinnamon candy. Tenants that have been in the apartments for a full year will receive one additional present: a damp, silken bag, the contents of which are a lock of black hair, an unrecognizable but freshly-cut strip of flesh, and a single eyetooth.
The halls will be decorated with bright red crepe-paper streamers, that will grow increasingly more decrepit as time passes, eventually shriveling and either rotting away with a faint smell of wetness on the first two floors, or crumbling to ash on the third through the seventh floors.
Finally, at seven this evening, a birthday cake will appear in the main lobby, at the receptionist desk, with one, cheerily bright candle lit, flickering in a slight breeze. It is quite edible, and delicious, if anyone is foolhardy enough to try it.
