SIGH...

I read an article and I thought of you. This lady compiled all the subtle privileges she has as a white person...then all the subtle privileges men have...and finally, her latest project is starting on all the subtle privileges she has a straight person. Her original aim was to dispel the myth that there is no more white privilege, but then she began to delve into the other cultural advantages certain groups have.

It was the kind of article you and I would discuss. Here's some of her heterosexism list...

1) My children do not have to answer questions about why I live with my partner.
2) I have no difficulty finding neighborhoods where people approve of our household.
3) My children are given tests and classes which implicitly support our kind of family unit, and do not turn them against my choice of domestic partnership.
4) I can travel alone or with my husband without expecting embarrassment or hostility in those who deal with us.
5) Most people I meet will see my marital arrangements as an asset to my life or as favorable on my likability, my competence, or my mental health.
6) I can talk about the social events of a weekend without fearing most listener's reactions.
7) I will feel welcomed and "normal" in the usual walks of public life, institutional, and social.

I think we can fairly safely add "It will never be questioned if I'm really straight." "I can talk about contemporary issues with others without having my sexual choices implicitly frowned upon." and "Celebrities who support my lifestyle choices will never be mocked."
