So… PORTAL. Five hundred years later. I knew I’d eventually get around to playing. Thanks to my roommate and pals at work, I knew the major plot and story of the game. Over the summer/fall, I played the first game but never got around to playing the second one till recently because I had a bit of free time.
Anyway. THIS GAME. Is amazing. I don’t play a lot of current games (seriously, my favorite game is Monkey Island and that’s from 1990). But the Portal series is so clever and so well-written. I think the puzzle-solving in the first game was a lot more difficult, though that could be more due to it being something new. But there’s such a wonderful feeling of accomplishment when you solve a particularly difficult puzzle. There’s also an equal and opposite feeling of frustration when you’re stuck on a particular level because you’re overthinking everything and can’t figure out that ONE. LAST. ITTY-BITTY. THING.
The characters in these games are fantastically written. GLaDOS’s insults, Wheatley’s bumbling about, Chell’s… quiet thoughts. And CAVE JOHNSON. Omg. And the character animation on both GLaDOS and Wheatley is delicious, even within gameplay. They can capture so much emotion and expression OH GOD I LOVE IT.
There are a bunch of lovely and talented ladies on Tumblr who have come up with their own designs for human!Wheatley (as well as all the other non-human characters). And I owed
basalt a drawing (or fifty), so I commandeered her Wheatley design to play around with. I love how no matter what, Wheatley will just start resembling Stephen Merchant. HOW CAN I RESIST GANGLY LEGS?!
Speaking of which, might I recommend
Blue Sky to you? It’s an incredibly well-written post-Portal 2 fic that got me a little enthused about this fandom. I’m in the middle of re-reading it at the mo between Sherlock fics and I have so many more ~*feelings*~ about it.
