Just... one kiss?

So, I saw “The Princess and the Frog”. I’ll be honest and say that I was WAY more excited to be out of the house and seeing my pals than the movie itself.

So I was pleasantly surprised that I ended up liking the movie a lot more than I thought I would. My expectations were low, sadly, for this movie. When I saw the trailers, I thought the designs and animation looked bland. There was some fan artist drawing concept art for Tiana that I thought was AMAZING rather than Tiana’s final designs.

BUT OMG. I loved her. And her aspirations weren’t “I WANT A MAN/PRINCE”, they were “I WANT A RESTAURANT.” Still quite ambitious, given the time period it’s set in. And I LOVED LOVED LOVED that her mom was alive. Is this the first Disney princess with a mother? Of course, ONE of those parents has got to go to make it TRAGIC.

And Naveen. A Disney prince with personality, WHAT?! Gasp. Unpossible. I know, I know, there have been other Princes with personality, but whenever I think of a Disney Prince, they’re always just *there*, you know? They don’t bring anything to the screen other than they have to rescue our heroine.

And Dr. Facilier! I *LOVE* characters with really long skinny legs. And huge hands. I wish we got a little more…. SOMETHING with him, because there definitely felt like something was lacking. But I loved him and listening to Keith David and his shadow creatures animation. I loved how they interacted with the characters by grabbing their shadows.

AND CHARLOTTE. I was like OMG IT’S ANIMATED GALINDA YESSSSSSSSSSSSS. And she wasn’t one-dimensional, either! I could just watch her animation all day. It was so gloriously snappy.

ADORABLE.

And I exploded during Tiana’s dream sequence with the profile lineless art animation. JOYS.

I’m so glad that Tiana spent all of her hard-earned money on the restaurant rather than relying on her friend’s wealth to pay for it. Of course, Louis the alligator helped, but it was Tiana’s savings. Not Naveen’s or Charlotte’s (or rather, Charlotte’s dad).

I think I’m echoing a few other reviews saying that the story felt a bit rushed, but I liked the build-up to Tiana and Naveen’s relationship, despite them falling in love within 24 hours. IT’S DISNEY.

And I wasn’t too keen on any of the songs. The only one that I somewhat liked was Tiana’s dream sequence song.

I wasn’t a big fan of the frog designs. Again, they were too bland for my tastes.

There were bits that made me uncomfortable to watch because of stereotypical clichés. The hillbilly scene was… umm… yeah. I was freaking out because there was one character with very pronounced toenails and I had awful flashbacks to those ads they used to have on Hotmail where they’d lift up nasty toenails. OH GOD, I’M SCREAMING IN MY HEAD JUST THINKING ABOUT IT.

Ray the firefly… when I saw him in the trailers the first time, I was like ARE YOU SERIOUS, DISNEY. But I’ll admit, I warmed up to him. AND THEN HE WENT SQUISH AND I WAS LIKE O_____O. I really wish that the reveal of the second star was the very last shot (I think someone in my party said this too).

(In my head, Evangeline is totally the Blue Fairy.)

Anyway. Yes. Not perfect by any means, but me going YAY far outweighed me going BOOOOOO, so that counts for something. I had a good time watching it and I’d go back again. It’s nice for young girls to have a new Disney princess to aspire to. And it’s soooooooooooo nice to have 2D back on the big screen.

And now, I'm going to watch FERNGULLY. This is a total lie. I'm going to watch "Sleeping Beauty" first, THEN "Ferngully".
