The Incredible Exploding Garden

Jul 15, 2004 19:53

I have to preface this by stating that for the previous two years, my garden has been a complete and utter failure. This has been due to multiple factors; among them, crappy weather conditions, my right arm not functioning properly, and two winters where ALL the wood ashes from our stove were put on the garden without my knowledge. The last one really mucked up the soil pH, it took lots of work to re-acidify the ground. Apparently, peppers are particularly sensitive to pH, last year they refused to grow, AT ALL. It was pathetic watching the leaves yellow and fall off. However, lots of work, sulfur and chicken manure have seemed to do the trick.

The garden is literally exploding. Stand back, you might get attacked by the veggies! It's like the garden is making up for lost time. Even the squash bugs (who normally kill off any squash and it's relatives (cukes, melons etc) seem to have taken a holiday this year. I didn't go out for almost the whole first week of July, when I did, I picked a WHEELBARROW load FULL of cukes and squash, including Zucchini *clubs*. Almost everyone I know is being visited by the *Veggie Fairy*. I have left care packages at the front door for friends that were not home. I have been picking and picking, but there appears to be no end in sight (not that I am complaining mind you, just amazed!) The beans have joined the chorus as well, and I just picked my first tomato, it weighed over a pound. The tomatoes are loaded, looks like there will be a LOT of tomato sauce, spaghetti and salsa in our future. Also, I am getting LOTS of Tomatillos, anyone have any good recipes? I have never cooked with them, should be interesting.

Wish me luck keeping up, and EAT YOUR VEGGIES!
