I am totally in love with this particular song by Taiwanese newcomer, Yoga Lin, and decided to read up a little.
The song title, Bo Le (伯乐), refers to the deity that takes care of horses in the heavens. There is a historical story behind the person. Bo Le was originally called Sun Yang (孙阳), someone who lived in the Spring-Autumn Period in ancient China and had a gift in choosing good horses. The king of Chu (楚) gave him the task to find a horse that can run ten miles a day (千里马). Bo Le visited many lands but was not satisfied with the horses he saw. On his way back, he chanced upon this horse pulling a huge load of salt up a slope. The horse was skinny and struggling with every step. When Bo Le went closer, the horse gave a neigh as if to tell Bo Le something. Straightaway, Bo Le could tell that this was a good horse. The owner was happy when Bo Le offered to buy the horse, as he felt it was too skinny and useless.
Back at the palace, the king was unhappy that Bo Le brought back a skinny horse. "How could it accompany me to the battlefield?", he asked. However, Bo Le instructed the king to feed it well and said it will grow strong. The king followed the instructions although he was not at all convinced. In less than a month, the horse did grow into a handsome stallion and was later used by the king in many successful battles he fought. It was then that the king admired and rewarded Bo Le.
Today, Bo Le is used to describe someone who appreciates talent. There's a Chinese saying that goes like this: "千里马常有,而伯乐不常有" meaning "good horses are a plenty, but there are very few Bo Le's". Hence, it is often a good thing when a talented man meets his Bo Le, a master who can appreciate and use his talents.
Yoga Lin's song spoke about Bo Le in a different way: In love, we are also seeking for someone who will ultimately be our Bo Le, a person who appreciates us as a person and love us, just like how Bo Le recognised a good horse and treated him well. There is another part to Bo Le's story... When the king died, it was decided that his concubines, officials and servants will all be buried in his tomb with him. The list included Bo Le, who also served the king. Somehow the horse knew his benefactor will be buried alive and broke out from the stable to save him. As the horse was too fast for the soldiers, Bo Le was saved. Such was the strong bond between Bo Le and the horse.
