Some Quick Updates on my TCM Course

Aug 20, 2008 22:22

I am now officially in my third year of my course.

Modules that I have finished:
(1) TCM Foundation 中医基础学
(2) TCM Diagnosis 中医诊断学
(3) TCM Herbs 中药学
(4) Human Anatomy 正常人体解剖
(5) Human Physiology 生理学
(6) Ancient Medical Texts 医古文
(7) Qigong 气功学

I scored 90 marks or more for each of the modules above except Qigong because that one got practical test. I am not so good with movements and postures, but still got quite good marks.

Modules now ongoing:
(1) TCM Formulation 方剂学
(2) Acupuncture 针灸学
(3) Human Pathology 病理学
(4) Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases 伤寒论

Formulation is an extension of TCM Herbs as we learn how different herbs work together to form common formulations. Pick up any medicine from the Chinese medical hall and chances are it will be made up of many different herbs, we have to memorise what the formulations are used for, what are the ingredients and why they are there.

Acupuncture is the longest module we are taking. We started acupuncture in Year 1 and we have completely learnt all the acupoints in the body and the different acupuncture and auxiliary techniques such as cupping and moxibuxion. The last part focuses on which acupoints and techniques to use for which diseases.

Pathology is an extension of anatomy and physiology. While anatomy talked about the normal human body and physiology talked about how the body function. Pathology talked about how we fall sick. These are the few western medicine classes we have to take.

Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases is the first of four ancient classical text we are studying. Having had a basic understanding of ancient text, we now begin to read the original works that have influenced traditional chinese medicine as we know today. This particular text dated back to the Eastern Han dynasty some 1800 years ago.

Very busy but I am still very interested in what I am studying as I see how my learning builds up. There are tons of things to memorise - concepts, herbs, formulations, acupoints, diseases etc. Now even have to memorise from the ancient texts, maciam like studying chinese literature. Not just that but also to see how different things are linked together. Frankly, I am at a stage where I forget everything after the exams, even though I can do well for the exams.

Hopefully in time to come, I will be able to help you guys diagnose and recommend TCM solutions that will fit your needs. I am thinking of starting a system whereby I can record all my questions gathered from friends and family members so I can do my own research and ask my teachers. I think this will be a better way to absorb than to blindly memorise without applying. Please feel free to support me in this and thank you very much.
