Proposing a Failure- changmin/sooyoung; failed comedy; g; oneshot
I can't believe I'm posting this. This is as old as my Bike fic... anyways, the title is weird! :D
It has been 6 years since Changmin and Sooyoung first met. Also, it has been 5 years since the two started a romantic relationship. When they first met, they hated each other and bickered endlessly. But they thought of the better. Now, Changmin can’t live without Sooyoung, and it’s the same vice versa.
He was going around the mall one day, trying to find a gift for Sooyoung for their 5th anniversary. He didn’t want to go with the usual flowers and chocolates. He looked for something else, which he didn’t know what. He searched until something caught his eye. He spotted a beautiful ring, a gorgeous diamond engagement ring. It was expensive, but he didn’t care. His family’s rich anyway. He bought it. Changmin knew that he had to give it to her. He didn’t know why. As he drove his car going back home, he thought that maybe he should already pop the question. He was ready to get married, he was sure. In a short amount of time contemplating, he decided it’s time to tell her that he wants to be with her forever. Besides, he remembered what he had heard from somewhere before. The best time for a woman to get married is when she least expects to.

“Wait, we’re going to eat dinner at your mother’s restaurant? Are you serious? Since it got famous all over Korea, you never got the chance to eat there anymore! I never ate there before! It was always packed!” Sooyoung exclaimed while sitting in the front passenger seat. She was excited. She wore a flowing red velvet dress that night, accentuating her curves. “Well, I made reservations like a normal customer would, and now we can eat there.” Changmin replied confidently as he looked at his girl.
“Hmmm… it’s been a long time since I last saw my friend who works there, you know.” Sooyoung said.
“Oh yeah, the chef. We’ll talk to her after we eat.”
They entered the huge yet classy and elegant restaurant. It was a big room with floor to ceiling windows making up the left and right walls, some part of it covered in gold drapes. Far across the huge double doors of the main entrance lies the bar, of which behind it is the kitchen where the magic happens. Different tables of different sizes with different numbers of chairs filled most of the space. The ceiling was painted with beautiful and ornate golden designs and on them hung numerous crystal chandeliers. The wooden oak floor was shiny. It was definitely something Changmin’s mom owned.
They sat at their table and placed their orders. As usual, the couple ordered food fit for four people. When they were ordering, Sooyoung noticed that Changmin whispered something to the waiter. She thought he was preparing something special for her, since they were celebrating their 5th anniversary. Her heart was jumping and fluttering. Actually, he did have a surprise. Before starting to eat, they both raised their glasses of champagne.
“To us, on our 5th anniversary.” Changmin said as he proposed a toast.
“Let’s hope to be together forever.” What Sooyoung said had made him smile.
After appetizers and a rather heavy main course, it was finally time for dessert. This was the part of the dinner Changmin was so nervous about. What if she says no? What if she won’t answer immediately and then she’ll just say ‘Give me time to think about this’… Na. I know I’m gonna marry her, Changmin thought.
“Ma’am, Sir, here’s your dessert.” the waiter, Baekhyun, said to the couple as he placed the platter on the table. Sooyoung’s face grew a huge smile while Changmin looked confused. WHAT’S THIS?!
--
“WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DESSERT I ORDERED?!” Changmin asked the chef. “Um sir, it’s on your table.” Hyoyeon, the chef and Sooyoung’s friend, answered. “I SPECIFICALLY ORDERED THE APRICOT CAKE WITH THE SUGAR DOME ON TOP SO YOU WILL PUT THE RING UNDER IT! WHY DID BAEKHYUN GIVE US APRICOT PIE?! AND WHERE DID YOU PUT THE RING??” Changmin asked again, angry. Baekhyun, who was also inside the kitchen, dropped his tray as he heard his name.
“Oh. The ring. I put it inside the pie.”
“WHAT?! It’s inside the pie?!” He was shocked. Who the hell would put a ring inside a pie?
“Yeah.”
“So you really put it inside? With the apricots and stuff?”
“Yup…”
“I told you make apricot CAKE with the sugar dome and not apricot PIE!”
“But that’s what you told me when you called me yesterday. Apricot PIE. And you told me to put it INSIDE.” Was this girl high when I told her my specific instructions?
“NO! I told you to make apricot CAKE and put it UNDER the sugar dome!”
“You know what, it’s done already. I’m sorry. You called me in the middle of work and I was so stressed and distracted when you talked to me. But I’m pretty sure YOU told me to make PIE and not CAKE.” Hyoyeon walked away leaving Changmin furious.
I just hope the ring’s fine and that pie wouldn’t taste disgusting. He thought. He couldn’t do anything else anymore.
“I’m gonna tell my mom about this and I will let her FIRE you!” Changmin shouted. But Hyoyeon just shrugged. How is he supposed to propose now?
--
“SOOYOUNG WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” Changmin asked his girlfriend, surprised. There was now only little left of the pie. “Changmin! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean it! It just looked so delicious and I know I gotta eat it! I still left… two slices for you! I saved that for you…” Sooyoung, now guilty for eating too much of the pie, apologized to Changmin. “YOU ATE THE PIE?!” he asked. “Um…um… it’s fine. Just don’t eat more of it.” he continued. I hope she didn’t eat the ring… I need it.
“Is there something wrong, honey?”
“No! Nothing’s wrong…”
Changmin sat down in his seat and examined the pie. He looked at the remaining slices while Sooyoung was quietly observing him. Find the ring…find it…find it… As he turned the platter around to examine the pie more, a little whipped cream was brushed against the sleeve of his shirt. “Sweetheart, I’m gonna go to the bathroom. I’m just going to wash this whip cream off.” Sooyoung nodded in reply when he stood up. But as he did, his shoulder hit a tray Baekhyun was holding that was carrying a Flaming Alaska, a spiked sponge cake filled with lots of sweet stuff and covered in literally flaming meringue. The dessert fell on the table; setting the apricot pie, and the table, on fire. But as it fell, it also set Chnagmin’s sleeve on fire. Customers in the restaurant rushed to the doors.
“Min! Y-your sleeve is on fire!” The scared Sooyoung, who was backing away, warned her boyfriend.
Changmin didn’t know what to do. He started blowing at his flaming sleeve. Sooyoung grabbed a table napkin and was trying to put away the fire in the table. Waiters around them froze in shock. Baekhyun collapsed on the floor.
I’M NOT GONNA DIE NOW.
He turned around and Hyoyeon splashed a bucket of water at him to stop the fire. Sunny, one of the waiters, got a fire extinguisher and aimed for the table. At her first try, she accidentally aimed for the wet Changmin. Every piece of him was now wet and white… and foamy. At least he’s not on fire anymore. “OMG Hyoyeon! Thanks for saving him! I owe you a lot!” Sooyoung said as she hugged her long-time-no-see friend. She almost hugged Changmin after, but he gestured her not to. Changmin didn’t seem to be physically hurt, only mentally. His proposal was a failure. And it got him wet and in a rather sticky situation. Sooyoung was instantly worried. She can see in Changmin’s face that he was pissed and annoyed. He’s that kind of guy. He shows his emotions through his face. She came closer and asked him what’s wrong. Of course, he wouldn’t tell her. He didn’t want her to get worried at him. But she already was.
--
When the couple was walking outside to leave, Changmin heard someone call his name. It was Hyoyeon. He went to her, leaving Sooyoung getting herself inside the car. Hyoyeon gave Changmin the ring he was looking for. It was a little burned, and a little slippery. He almost forgot about it too.
“I want to say sorry, for messing up your ‘special day’” Hyoyeon said, making quote marks in the air while saying ‘special day’.
“Oh. It’s fine.” Changmin calmed down. He was sad now, his heart felt like it was gonna go down to his stomach.
“Tell me if you’re done with it okay? And invite me to your wedding.”
“Sure. No problem. Uhm… thanks for the awesome dinner, and for the bucket of water.”
“It’s cool. Sorry again. Please don’t let your mother fire me.”
I wonder what Hyo gave to Min, Sooyoung thought, looking at the two people outside.
--
“Min, are you sure you’re okay?” Sooyoung asked.
“Yeah. Don’t worry I’m fine.” Changmin replied, although his face still has the same emotion he had when he got back the ring. He stopped the car in front of Sooyoung’s apartment.
“I know you Min. I know you’re mad about something-or you’re feeling a little blue. If it’s about the fire-“
“No, no. Everything’s fine. It’s also fine with me if you ate the whole pie.” He said while forcing a smile. “I’ll tell you tomorrow.” Changmin continued, which is practically a lie, because he’s not telling Sooyoung how his proposal to her got ruined.
“Good night.” With that, Sooyoung leaned in closer to him and placed her soft lips on his.
“Happy Anniversary, darling.”
