(i really don't know how this ended up Christmassy, because i think i originally wrote it in february or something)

Months passed, and in that time, Donghae finally started to be able to relax. The nightmares stopped, and Eunhyuk and Kibum saw him smiling more and more. Then, one morning mid-December, Donghae came downstairs to see Kibum…decorating.

“Whatchya doing?” He asked, still sleepy.

“Christmas is in two weeks, Hae…it’s time to start getting ready for it.”

“What’s so special about Christmas…?” Donghae asked.

“What’s so special about…” Kibum trailed off, and decided, right then, to give Donghae and Eunhyuk the best Christmas he could. “Well, it’s a holiday that you spend with the people you love, and who love you. You give each other presents, and you eat good food, and everyone’s happy.”

Donghae’s face was spacey, trying to picture that. He shook his head, and then Kibum said, “Help me decorate?” Donghae’s face broke into a grin, and he nodded. Kibum went over to a big box in the living room, and started pulling out what looked like sections of a tree. Donghae helped him, and said, “Is there any point in asking why we need a fake tree?” Kibum grinned, and said, “The tree’s the best part!! You can’t have Christmas without a Christmas tree!”

They set up the tree, and Kibum went to get another box. He opened it, and Donghae’s eyes widened. Inside were shiny, sparkly things, and he was going to get to touch them, and look at them, and play with them. He crouched down next to it, and pulled out a coiled strand of a beaded garland thing. Then he looked at Kibum, and said, “So, how do we decorate a Christmas tree?”

Kibum pulled out a few ornaments with little metal hooks, and showed him how to hang them on the branches. “Oooh, I almost forgot!! I got you something!” He said, running up to his room, and coming back a minute later, holding a sparkly fish ornament.

“Kibummie, it’s sooo pretty!! Thank you!!” Donghae squealed. Eunhyuk had been out with a friend, and he walked in to see what they were up to, and saw the tree.

“Hyukkie!! Look, we’re decorating!” Donghae said, excited when he saw his brother. “Wanna help?”

Eunhyuk walked over, and pulled out a few ornaments, handing them to Donghae to put on the tree. Donghae handled them carefully, as if they’d break because…well, they would.

“Kibummie, what’s the point of a Christmas tree?” Donghae asked, holding another ornament, this one a large round ball shaped thing.

“You wrap Christmas presents and put them under it, and then Christmas morning, everyone opens their presents.”

Donghae’s eyes got wider, if that was possible. “Presents? Oh! What do you want for Christmas? And what about you, Hyukkie?” Kibum laughed. “I’ve already got everything I want! You two helping me decorate is the best present ever. Usually, I spend Christmas alone because my parents are gone a lot. Which reminds me, Eunhyuk. We should invite a few people over.”

“Sounds good. I’ll talk to Sungmin, and see if he’s free.”

Then, Kibum pulled yet another shiny thing out of the box, and Donghae, curious, helped him untangle it. They wrapped it loosely around the tree, and then Kibum plugged it in. the tree lit up with multicolored lights. Donghae’s face lit up with more happiness than either Kibum or Eunhyuk had ever seen from him. He hugged Kibum excitedly, and said, “It’s sooo pretty.” Then he sat down and gazed at it in wonder and happiness. Kibum heard a little click, and glanced at Eunhyuk, who’d pulled out his phone and snapped a picture. The Eunhyuk got a call and had to leave, but he promised to be back again later.

“Don’t get caught in the snow!!” Donghae called after him.

“Donghae, there’s still one more thing we have to do on the tree.” Kibum pulled out the last thing in the box. It was large, and wrapped in tissue paper. Donghae looked at him, and then at the thing he was holding, and Kibum let him unwrap it, revealing a large star tree topper. It was glittery and colorful and happy. Kibum grabbed a chair and stood on it and placed the star on the top of the tree. Suddenly, he felt Donghae hugging his waist, crying, and he said, “What…? What’s wrong?”

“It’s just sooooooooo pretty!!” Donghae said, and Kibum realized that those were happy tears. He got off the chair, and pulled Donghae into a better hug, and kissed the top of his head. “It usually doesn’t look this good. Thanks for helping.” Then he said, “Oooh, wait, we forgot something!” He ran out of the room, and came back with something that made Donghae’s face light up even more. “Tinsel is the best part.” They opened one of the packages, and Kibum showed him how to drape the shiny strands over the branches. It took them ages to make it perfect, and when they were done, you couldn’t see much more than silver on Donghae’s half.

Later, they were cuddled up on the couch watching a lifetime’s worth of Christmas movies to make up for the fact that this was the first time Donghae had seen any of them. Kibum wasn’t really watching the movie, though. Donghae was way more entertaining than seeing if Buddy the ELF found his father or not. Donghae grinned and turned to Kibum to say something, and Kibum couldn’t help it, and he pressed his lips gently on Donghae’s. Donghae froze, surprised, and Kibum mentally started to kick himself. Then, Donghae hesitantly kissed him back.

The kiss didn’t get passionate, and Kibum didn’t force anything. After a minute, the broke apart, and Donghae grinned and turned back to the movie. Kibum ended up falling asleep. He woke up the next morning, still laying on the couch with Donghae.

He carefully got up, not waking up the younger boy, and went into the kitchen. Eunhyuk was sitting there, and looked up when Kibum walked in.

“You okay, Hyung?” Kibum asked, seeing that Eunhyuk looked like he’d been up all night. Eunhyuk hesitated, and then said, “Do you have any advice for how to confess to someone?”

“Just…be honest, I guess…? Who is it?” Kibum said, making something with the kettle.

Eunhyuk looked down, blushing slightly, and said, “Sungmin.”

Kibum nodded, unsurprised, and thought for a minute before saying, “Make him a pumpkin pie or something. Even I know how much he likes pumpkin. Or, actually, get Donghae to make it for you.” Donghae was the best cook in the bunch, and the other two knew it.

“Speak of the devil…” Eunhyuk said, as Donghae sleepily wandered in. He sat down next to Eunhyuk, and used him as a pillow. Kibum set mugs of what looked like hot chocolate in front of both of them.

“It’s mint hot chocolate. It’s the best Christmassy drink ever.” Kibum said, reading Eunhyuk’s face. Eunhyuk sniffed it for a second, but shrugged and took a sip. His eyes brightened,  and Kibum grinned at him.

Donghae loved the drink, and he made Kibum make it for him over and over until he was hyped up on chocolate. He bounced over to Eunhyuk and said, “Hyukkie, I wanna go secret Christmas shopping!!” Eunhyuk said, “It’s not really secret when you shout about it, you know.” But he couldn’t keep the smile off his face. Donghae was more adorable than Sungmin when he wanted to be.

“Byeee, Kibummie, we’ll be back later!” He sang at Kibum as the two of them walked out.

Christmas came, and Donghae was so happy. Sungmin came over, and the group of them stayed up late, eating and watching movies. The next day, they exchanged gifts. Kibum gave Donghae another fish; this one was a male white betta in a new, smaller tank. Donghae jumped up and hugged him, thrilled. Then he handed Kibum his present, and Kibum opened the larger package, and saw the newest version of Starcraft. He was thrilled. He’d been waiting for this game for ages. Then Donghae handed him the other package, which was smaller. Donghae was suddenly very interested in watching his new fish swim and show off it’s fins. Kibum carefully took of the wrapping paper, and inside was a small black velvet box. He opened it, and inside were two rings, both with “KiHae” engraved on them. Couple rings. He looked at Donghae, who glanced up at him, blushing. “You want to be a couple?” Kibum asked. Donghae nodded hesitantly, and Kibum pulled him up onto his lap, then took one of the rings, and slid it onto Donghae’s ring finger on his left hand. Donghae took the other one and slid it onto Kibum’s ring finger. Then, Kibum turned Donghae’s chin to make the younger boy look at him. “I love you, Donghae.”

“I love you too, Kibum. Forever.”
