Would My Life Be Better if I Loved Football Too?
As I have mentioned before, from time to time I have been trying to discover the appeal of american football for myself. I have gone about this in several ways including purchasing my own NFL standard game ball that I toss from hand to while while watching football themed movies or the TV show "Friday Night Lights". Although I can appreciate the sport in the context of entertainment programs, the actual game still fails to hold my attention. My satellite provider includes the NFL Network with my subscription and I have tried watching rebroadcasts of games from last season but my attention inevitably drifts away with all of the timeouts and downtime between plays. I bought a copy of "Football for Dummies" in hopes that it could shed some more light on the sport but learning more about the rules just deepened my opinion that it is an over-regulated and arbitrary sport. I get the gist of what the game is all about. It is basically one team slowly gaining territory on another team in hopes of scoring points at the other end of the field. It is just that I don't find the actual process of encroaching on the other teams side all that exciting. Is there something to it that I am missing? I can appreciate just about every other sport on some level yet the most popular sport in this country is a total mystery to me. I didn't care as much in my youth that my indifference to the sport set me apart. Now I acknowledge that people are really into it and I feel like I am missing out by not being able to share their enthusiasm. There are plenty of discussions (and betting pools) at work that I can't really join in on. I favor being honest but would it be easier to get along with other people if I claimed to like a particular team and participate in the discussions as best as I can? I like to think that I am open to learning to like new things but I fear that I may never find that I like football and that it will be something that sets me apart from others. I kind of hope that I figure it out someday and then I can look at this entry and laugh at what a fool I was for not seeing it at the time but I am not sure that will ever happen.
