thoughts on relocation

i realized the other day that i have moved to royal oak. i live in a part of austin that is disturbingly like the city in which i grew up--best described, i think, as what happens to cool, idealistic people when they grow up and suddenly have some money. hip, but in a ritzy way. the flagship whole foods a few blocks away is a pretty good representation of the area.
whatever; i really love the trees outside my window coupled with the the busy street to my left. i love being able to walk to a neighborhood grocery store where the clerk balances my purchase on his head while ringing me up, but also being in a very urban area. growing up in downtown royal oak scarred me; i don't think i'll ever be able to live somewhere that's not adjacent to a downtown area with every imaginable amenity a quick walk away. it's expensive, sure, but it's a priority i'm willing to shell out for. i'll just have to eat a bit more ramen than usual.
i also love the cat with a cropped tail and ears who follows me around the parking lot. he looks like a miniature bear. maybe he'll follow me into my apartment one day and stay.
