So I went back to early bedtime last night. I went to school to help with packing and Mat's mom came over to babysit. I put him down for a nap when she got here, and when he woke up I wasn't here. She said that really upset him - when she went into his room he was smiling and when he saw it wasn't me, he started crying and took 20 minutes to settle down. I felt so bad to hear that, and this makes me more worried about daycare. But anyway, when I got home he probably was due for another nap, but I think he was so happy I was home that he wouldn't sleep. I did lay him in his crib but he just cried and I felt guilty, so I took him out and played with him.
This was fine until around 5 when he was tired, but it was too late for a nap and too early for bedtime. My goal was to start bedtime routine around 5:45 so he'd be in his crib by 6 and hopefully asleep by 6:15. Well, it did not go as planned. I started at 5:30 because he was miserable, skipped the story because he wouldn't tolerate it, and he fell asleep literally in seconds of my laying him down in the crib. He was asleep at 5:50 pm. For the night.
He woke up about 40 minutes in, and I panicked a little because I wasn't sure if I should treat it like a nap or bedtime. But he put himself back to sleep so I didn't have to decide. He woke up again at 9:30. I tried to let him cry, I sent Mat in to comfort him, no luck. I don't want him to get in the routine of needing a 9:30 feeding every night, but at the same time, if he's hungry then he's hungry. So o fed him and he fell back to sleep pretty quickly after that, which made me feel justified that maybe he was legitimately hungry. He slept from 10-3:30, so better than the 3 hours I got the night before, and then up for the day at 6. So he went to bed earlier than I would have liked, but still not terrible overall.
The problem now is the hear. Mat thinks he's waking up because he's hot. The Merlin suit is thick, but we only put him in a diaper underneath and he's never woken up sweating or anything, but maybe he's right. Last night we ran his ceiling fan like always and brought in a second fan. However this afternoon it is 78 degrees up there and I cannot get it any colder. I had the air set for 70 but it ran nonstop and couldn't get the downstairs cooler than 72, and obviously upstairs is hotter.
So we're trying something new. He's napping in a sleep sack I had bought awhile ago. It allows his arms to be free, which is good because I know he won't tolerate being swaddled anymore. I was worried he wouldn't sleep because when I first laid him down he just had a grand old time playing with his feet, but he fell asleep in under ten minutes. He's been asleep for 30 minutes but I think he just woke up as I type this. The problem with this is when he startles there's nothing on his arms to stop him from going crazy, so I think the transition between sleep cycles will be hard.
Mat is on his way home and we're going to go to by a window AC unit for his room. This house really needs 2 zone AC and heat but we can't afford to do it right now. Hopefully cooling off the room will help him sleep better tonight.
After day 10 ( or maybe on day 10?) I'm supposed to just put him down and leave the room. Usually I wait for him to stop crying. That will be hard for me.
