Birth

Well, after nearly 9 months of gestation at work, my baby was born today. Things were touch and go at first, but after just a couple hours on the respirator, it's breathing on its own, and has a nice pink color.

Even though it drools a lot now, like any proud papa I see the potential in it for greatness. Soon it will be crawling, then walking, and eventually it will be independent enough to leave me with an empty nest. I'll try not to be overprotective, but I think it will need an active parent for at least another 18 months.

Since I got back from vacation, I've been in labor for 12-15 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whew. Now I need a vacation! But I have to say, that I haven't begrudged the time spent. It's been great working on a project with a small team of competent people, where I have my fingers in every bit of the project. In the past few weeks, I've been doing testing, writing code, debugging, data design, project management, architecture, and documentation. Even though I've been really busy, it's been *incredibly* productive, and a lot of fun. It's like working for a startup again.

Now my challenge is to keep that sense of purpose and excitement about the work, but start to find balance again.

P.S. I've turned off the aggregation of twitter posts here. If you care, you can follow me there. I'll keep this for major updates.
