Although I suppose your first night on a real West End stage as one of the main leads in an extremely popular musical would leave most of us in a wee bit of a nervous state!
Yes,
kingbantam and I attended Daniel's opening night in Avenue Q.
Simply put, he performed beautifully. I've now seen the show three times, and last night's (partially new) cast gave an admirable performance in their debut. I thought Daniel did a fabulous job with both of the voices of Princeton and Rod and he's obviously mastered the art of puppetry. I was also really pleased that Mark Goldthorp carried off the roles of Nicky and Trekkie Monster beautifully. I've become a wee bit of a fan after seeing him in "I Love You Because" where I thought his comic timing and voice was excellent.
Unfortunately, Daniel didn't stage door on opening night which isn't really that surprising as his family and friends were there (and he probably didn't think anybody would even be stage dooring him!). I'm sure I'll be able to snag him in February -- or possibly on some earlier evening as I have a feeling I may be seeing this production again. Anybody up for another Avenue Q jaunt?
However, we did get a little bonus :D Towards the very end of the intermission, as
kingbantam and I were looking around, we suddenly noticed a very familiar looking head a few rows behind us. Yep. John and his entourage of Scott, Gavin and Stuart were in the audience! Awww. What a supportive group. And sure enough, the entourage went backstage and eventually left via the stagedoor we were waiting by. Both
kingbantam and I briefly thought about saying something to John, but decided the more prudent course of conduct would be to simply smile and let the guy have a relaxing evening with just his partner and friends. (But how does he do it? He manages to make jeans and a hoody look sexy? ::grins::)
