Happy Canada Day!! Nine years down the road here in the UK as a resident but, come the first of July, and my patriotic flare still kicks in :D.
On that note, time to resume posting of some of my pics. And in honour of the day, here are a few of my favourite pics from Canada, beginning with an image from Halifax harbour.
This was taken on Boxing Day in Thunder Bay a few years ago. My parents live on the shores of Lake Superior on a bay to the west of the city. Depending on the weather, the bay may or may not freeze over. This particular year it froze over magnificently just before Christmas but the temperature differentials were still significant enough to give rise to the fog characterizing this image.
One of the most beautiful places in the world is -- without doubt -- the Canadian Rockies. I've had the pleasure of visiting several times and each time, I swear to myself that *this* is where I want to retire some day ... ::sweet dreams::
On that note, Lake Louise (see above) *really* is this gorgeous.
Back to TBay. My town has a *long* history -- for the Americas that is. Being a port town, as soon as the Europeans arrived (in this case in the form of fur traders of the North West Trading Company), this little speck of dirt became of interest in the late 1700's. And along with the visitors, the stories began. The most notable of which was the
The Legend of the Sleeping Giant. If you squint just a wee bit, it shouldn't take too much imagination to see the giant's head on the far left and his arms crossed across his torso as he lies across the entry to Silver Islet -- the eternal guardian.
Speaking of guardians, I'm rather fond of this image taken just outside of Peggy's Cove in Halifax. I have this vision of a queue of lobsters shuffling along and heading upwards :D.
And finally, Thunder Bay isn't exactly the most exotic of locations. But as we're pretty much dead centre when it comes to Canada, if you're planning on doing a full TransCanada Highway tour, you're going to travel through TBay. On that note, we have a hostel which has its own tradition of encouraging visitors to post signs to their home towns. This is only two of the existing four signs... :D.
