The First Sign of the Apocalypse ...

evildrem and are I hooked on Glee.

This really should not have happened. We didn't expect it to happen. Really. It's set in an American high school. And it focusses on a *glee* club. They don't exist in England and my high school in Ontario certainly didn't have one. And just the idea of a *glee* club made us think of saccharine, sparkly characters bursting into song at inopportune times.

We were wrong. After watching four eps last night, another two together this morning (and I'm currently on episode eight) we are completely and thoroughly hooked. The humour is dark and wicked; there are fabulously cracky adult characters; the kids are complex and three dimensional; and the music and dancing are awesome!

evildrem and I are wondering why did nobody force us to sit down and watch this earlier? Naughty, naughty flist. We were sitting at a table with him and during the evening we were talking about various shows we're all watching. He mentioned Glee as a favourite and we asked him to sell us on the show. Why should we watch it? His response: you'll sit down not expecting to enjoy the show and the next thing you know you'll be mainlining all the episodes. Dark and serious? No. Good fun? Yes. So evildrem and I agreed that we'd give it a go.

So let's just say that if we meet up with the lad at another con, we owe him a drink :).

Speaking of the con, it was lovely! We did the Opening Ceremonies and Meet and Greet on Friday night and the guest panels on Saturday. The Meet and Greet was particularly fabulous. As we were at a table of only 3/4 people (it fluctuated during the evening), when the guests came to our table we had a lot of face to face time with them.

Francis Capra was looking very sharp (and with hair this time) but was just as engaging as last year. He hasn't been working very much, but he's hoping to do more voice work in the future. He has done a few guest spots on various shows (including NCIS) and (how lovely is this), although he's not massively keen to do guest spots, he said he'd specifically look for shows for which Sean/Starfury organize conventions so that he'd have the chance to return to England. He genuinely loves meeting the fans --that comes across very clearly. He's also somewhat optimistic that pilot season this year will land him some work. ::fingers crossed::. And when he's not auditioning, he's still busy playing World of Warcraft -- looking to reach Gladiator level ;).

Michael Muhney is lovely. When he joined our table, he commented on the fact that at an earlier table, they'd been encouraging him to drink some shots they'd pre-arranged. But, he'd declined on the basis that the night before he'd met up with two friends who now live in London at their local neighbourhood bar and enjoyed many, many Palm beers. Ergo, he was going to save the drinking for Saturday ;). And then we had a lovely chat in general including his fascination with the warnings on cigarettes here in the UK. He's amazed at how blatant they are. He also seems to be genuinely chuffed with his role on the "Young and the Restless". It's giving him a level of exposure which he's never experienced before -- and he's taking full advantage of it. Good for him.

And finally, there was Percy Daggs III. Awwww. He's such a sweetie. This is his first convention but he handled it beautifully. Like Francis, he hasn't been working very much recently, but pilot season has kept him busy as well. He brought his girlfriend with him and it was so adorable how much he's smitten with her. Like Francis, he started in the world of entertainment fairly early -- his first gig was a K-Mart commercial if I recall correctly. And he told a lovely story about how it was his mother who encouraged him to start auditioning after she'd had a dream about his career, followed up with a similar dream of his own. This was his first trip to England and unfortunately, he didn't have a lot of time to actually visit outside of the boundaries of the Heathrow area. But he was fascinated by cricket. Quite ;) And when asked about stories of his days on Veronica Mars, he did some fabulous impersonations of Jason Dohrig -- spot on :).

And I had the chance to meet the fabulous lama_not_llama! 'Twas a pleasure to meet you girl! Here's hoping we'll have a chance to meet up again before you move over the pond to one of my favourite countries and provinces.

All in all, good fun!

I also managed to have a quick chat with Sean of Starfury to clarify what the "Gold" tickets for the next couple of events entitle the attendees. Apparently, Gold gets you the Meet and Greet, priority seating, priority autograph queuing, and a bonus poster designed for the event. Works for me!

conventions, glee
