Spurred on by too many conversations this year that have included the phrase "But! You haven't seen/read that, it's a classic!" recommend me three films or three books that I absolutely must see or read - for each of those I've seen or read already I'll let you know what I thought; and for each of them I haven't I'll recommend you something in

Books: The Meaning of Everything by Simon Winchester, Moab is my Washpot by Stephen Fry, Freakonomics by Steven Levitt
Other than being surprised when anyone hasn't seen The Usual Suspects, I wouldn't necessarily say 'It's a classic, you must read/see it' of any of these. They are, however, films and books that I enjoyed a lot. The books are all non-fiction as I think fiction reading is so much a matter of taste that it's hard to recommend a book without having a genre to recommend within.

Astoundingly excellent film, sir! Know that the sequel, City Of Men, is like?
Second Chance At Eden
Not usually a short stories kind of guy, but this collection was a well put-together deeper-delving into much of the Night's Dawn universe
In return, The Motorcycle Diaries, The Weeping Camel and Hackers And Painters by Paul Graham

No, I should really add it to my rental list.
The Motorcycle Diaries, The Weeping Camel and Hackers And Painters by Paul Graham
