this has been a fun-filled weekend of exciting purchases in the world of julie.
I got back from england with my dad on wednesday - lots of fun, but i'm so happy to be back. I always feel so crowded in europe. I love it for a week or so, but I'm just so relieved whenever i step off the plane and get back on the road home, seeing miles and miles of sprawling countryside, and wide lanes big enough for our ridiculous oversize SUVs. Someday I hope to live in a happy suburb with a backyard, frontyard, and porch, with clean enough air so that I don't have chest pains like when I'm outside too long in Houston. But I digress.
I went to the 350 mile yard sale with my mom on Friday. We were searching for cheap furniture for my brother's and sister's apartments, and I was mostly just looking for kooky stuff you don't see every day. We found a couple of leather chairs in really good shape for $20, and a wooden chair for $5, and then some war memorabilia caught my eye. An antique dealer had set up a stand that, among other things, had Nazi paraphenalia from WWII. Some of you may know, I've been mildly obsessed with the Holocaust/WWII since I was abut 12, and I have a pretty sizeable collection of Holocaust books. So this definitely piqued my interest. In the end, he made me a good deal on a Nazi SS ring (Viking division). It has a viking head in the center, flanked on the left with a swastika, and the right with the SS symbol. Then the dealer threw in a Nazi-manufactured undischarged bullet for free. It has the nazi maker's mark and the date of manufacturing (1938) printed on the bottom of the shell. So, my Holocaust memorabilia collection is growing. What I'm interested in now is finding some memorabilia from the other side of the fenc, to balance it all out. But that's for another day.
On lighter note, i finally got some rainboots! They're JCrew, navy blue, calf-high, with blue and green laces on the tops. I can't wait for a rainy day.
I'm not ready to come back to Houston yet.
