This post contains HP spoilers. You've been warned :-)
So, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I wasn't going to read it as soon as it came out because I *knew* that as soon as I finished it, I'd be sad. The book would just make me want more and I'd have to go on knowing there would be no more. Turns out, I was right. Sad :-/ On the plus side, I feel like there are some very good openings at the end for more books in the HP-verse. Let's hope JKR doesn't feel like she's rich enough now and decides to keep writing for my sake :-)
In the end, I read my mom's book (started Sunday evening, finished Monday evening). At her suggestion, we read the epilogue together on Sunday afternoon and she told me all sorts of spoilers she'd found by going online to British websites. For me, reading has never been about finding out what happens, but rather about visiting the created world for a period of time. I was on a family vacation last week, and we had 3 copies between 21 people (although only 6 people were focused on reading), so that was interesting. My brother likes to annoy people by giving spoilers and my uncle HATES knowing, so it made for some interesting times ;-)
I found the 300 pages spent whining in the forest a tad dull ... especially since I didn't realize until almost the end of that section that they were actually going places and searching for the horcruxes and not just sitting around arguing! I must say though, I am happy that Ron and Hermione ended up together :-) I always thought Hermione would go for Harry and then I'd feel bad for Ron, but I think this worked out the best. Although I don't think I get Harry and Ginny... I guess you can't win them all. After that, things got much more interesting. This book has awesome movie potential, imo. I hope the movie people don't screw it up.
And really, WHY did Lupin and Tonks have to die? We didn't see how they died; the last time Harry saw Lupin he yelled at him (I thought that Lupin was going to turn out to be a death eater using poly-juice.. I was wrong ;-)); and now their son is an orphan. I know people have said "Death just comes out of nowhere and Voldemort is evil" but I really didn't appreciate Lupin, Tonks and Dobby dying :-/ And I admit, up until I saw the 5th movie, I thought Sirius was going to come back through that doorway. Why have authors all gotten on this kick of killing people? Hrmph.
Anyway, other than that -- I thought it was pretty good :-) I think it would have been a more interesting choice for Harry to have all 3 Hallows at once and explore what happens when they're combined... and I wish she had given me a lot more information in the epilogue once she decided to go that way. Ah well, can't win them all.
